Kiwis enjoy a flying U-turn
By John Garnaut
May 12 2003

New Zealand, Australia's favourite kicking can, was so obviously inferior three years ago that its population was shrinking. About 2000 dissatisfied Kiwis fled their homeland each month and the largest portion ended up in Sydney.

The latest immigration data may, however, challenge Australia's superiority complex: talented Kiwis are heading back across the Tasman and others are following.

New Zealanders are returning from Australia at an accelerated rate while the exodus the other way is slowing.

A New Zealand economist puts it down to economic and safety factors: "In 2000 the economy started booming, then planes starting flying into buildings and it wasn't safe to go anywhere Australians were."

Film-maker Dave Rittey has won awards at international festivals, but struggled for three years to find a break in Australia. He returned to Christchurch six months ago and has been flat out directing films and television commercials ever since. Mr Rittey believes a more subtle cultural and political renaissance is taking place. "We used to emulate Australia or America but now we've really found our own sound, our own voice, and we're really proud of that," he said.

New Zealand films such as Whale Rider are "totally world class", he says, and Hollywood extravaganzas such as Samurai and Lord of the Rings have triggered their own tourist booms. Overseas tourist arrivals to New Zealand are growing by 5 per cent a year, while in Australia they have been falling since the Olympics.

Lonely Planet sold more guide books last year for New Zealand than for Australia, for the first time, and its staff voted New Zealand the world's number one tourist destination. A suppressed Howard Government report says tourists are choosing New Zealand over Australia for its comparatively friendly international image.

New Zealand's unemployment rate is running at 5 per cent, compared with Australia's 6 per cent. New Zealand is running trade surpluses while Australia is enduring record trade deficits.

Colin James, a political commentator with the New Zealand Herald, says even New Zealand wines are coming of age. In London they receive higher average bottle prices than wines from any other country.

"There are a lot of little stories like that which lift us above our mediocrity," James says.

He, like many Kiwis, is not getting carried away: "I think New Zealanders know that what goes up can come down".
