Importing Motor Vehicles
 

Has anyone imported a motor vehicle, specifically a motorbike, from UK to Oz, if so any help/info would be appreciated. i have searched for and read the info provided by the Australian Customs guys, which was pretty useful, but any additional info would be great.

In the process of doing this myself and it seams pretty straightforward. I've got an email from the vic' motor vehicle agency stating what the requirements and est costs are which I can send on if you pm me your email.

I've also just applied - very easy. i'm assuming I've got approval.

You need to have owned it for 12 months prior to exporting it.
If you need any info I'd be gald to help.
I'm taking a 748 with me.

In summary, print off form , attach certified copies of driving license, log sheet , every page of passport!! (local solicitor can certify them) and any service reciepts etc for additional proof of ownership. Also, I was asked for a covering letter declaring I've been in the UK all my life owned the bike for blah blah , have not been out of the country for any long periods during ownership.

I didn't send copies of the insurance , but these may be required as additional proof . If you have them send them . I didn't.

Add a credit card number to the form for the £20 fee.

Hopefully any day soon my Aus mate should recieve my approval to import.

Basically its to put people off importing purely to make money, I would assume.

Have you got the bike??

I have searched high and low and can't find anything that says any imported vehicle must be owned by the importer for more than 12 months. Help me out here guys, please!!

This scheme allows a vehicle to be imported as a personal import without proof that it meets the ADRs, but the vehicle is expected to provide a level of safety similar to Australian vehicles.

To be eligible for a personal import the following criteria must be satisfied:

the vehicle has been owned and used by the applicant for a continuous period of at least 12 months (3 months where ownership and use of the vehicle commenced before 8 May 2000);
at the time the vehicle is imported, the applicant is:
an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident; or
a person who has applied to become an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident;
the applicant is of an age that entitles him or her to hold a licence or a permit to drive a road vehicle of that type;
the applicant undertakes to comply with any requirements as to road safety that are imposed in respect of the vehicle by the Administrator; and
the applicant has not imported a road vehicle owned by him/her within the year ending on the day on which the vehicle in respect of which the application is made is landed in Australia.

Does this mean any vehicle under 12 months has to meet the ADRs?

If so, how easy is this to accomplish? Is it similar to our MOT test?

I really need help with this one guys as I about to buy something and would like to take it to Oz with me.

I was recently told the import tax on my Audi S3 (worth about £20k) in the Uk would set me back the best part of £10K :scared:

Needless to say I'll be selling it, check the import duty and do some sums before committing yourself, it may be different for motorbikes.

the facts and figures for me didn't add up. the loss i'd take in shipping it over was a lot higher than the loss i'd take from selling it here in the UK and then buying new on arrival.

it depends on how much value you put on the bike for personal reasons. mine wasn't a classic or anything specialy i couldn't replace easily, so it wasn't worth it in the end.
