Re: Importing Cars
Hi! John,
Now there is a thread, instead of doing a p.m. thought I'd just add to this!
Daughter contacted a company called Penguin Shipping near Southampton Docks, 01794 830555, almost three years ago, before she left, and started the process off, her costs for agent/shipping etc; was £1,200. The vehicle was to be 'steam cleaned' before departure, we knew of a friend who washed etc; vehicles down for his company, (so at no extra cost) although most people were of the opinion, ref; needing it done again on arrival!? The day before departure, daughter had already left Uk, I drove her 10 yrs old Toyota 4x4 to the docks and parked it outside the given office, paper work exchanged etc;
We were given name of ship, where we could track it during it's journey, on arrival company contacted my daughter, who then arranged to go to Fremantlefor collection. I know she had to pay some more, not sure at the moment how much, but I know it wasn't that bad! They still have the vehicle now.
When they tried to sell in Uk, they were offered 'stupid' amounts, someone even asked to be paid to take it off!
Our car is a Mazda 3, 4 yrs old, told, in Uk might get £6-£7,000, trade in, tried to sell private, offered £3,500! So contacted PenqPenguino were still just as helpful and profesional, as before, and the quote was £1,000! We are taking our car.
Hope this gives you a good idea, from our experience.
Kind Regards Lin

Re: bringing vw
Would bring your camper if you can, not many for sale here, and expensive if you find one. Just be aware, all fittings have to be approved, seats, gas, roof etc. Doesn't take long (in Queensland) dept of transport just do inspection .

Again I can't stress enough that the shipping companies in the UK who tell you all that it's "only £1,000" (etc) to ship your car over are not telling you the whole story, probably because they want your business. There are a lot of other charges, requirements, forms and hassle that has to be completed which they don't tell you about. In some states (i.e. Victoria) these are all compulsory and in others they are not, but they are generally required in all states.
I have a really bad feeling that a lot of people who have imported were not given the full picture and could well have outstanding requirements which were never completed.
there is also a l v t (luxury vehicle tax) that applies to certain makes, there was a guy at customs at brisbane port sent me out a whole breakdown of costs when i was thinking of shipping my mercedes, this is on top of import duty and gst ,ive since deleted the e-mail ,it cost so much i just forgot about the idea of it there and then,i think it was 2grand for a 15 grand or something like that but there is def a lvt also
As an example for a marque with an Australian used value of ~$120,000 (easy for a late model German)
- Customs Value (~65% of Street Value): $78,000.00
- Customs Duty (10% Customs Value): $7,800.00
- GST (10% Value, Duty & Shipping): $8,580.00
- Luxury Car Tax @ 33% (($94,380.00 - $57,180) x 0.33): $14,541.82
- Total Customs Duty Due: $30,921.82 (£14,412.27)
The Excel I have created which is available in the article takes all this into account.

Re: Importing Cars
I have a 32 foot American RV Motorhome that I would love to take with me to Queensland. I know that something similar there locally made is big bucks. Has anyone on here any ideas on importation costs, rules on this?

Re: Importing Cars
And you say it was a 7 year old car. Thus if I look at prices in 1998 and then 2007, by my limited grasp of maths I'd make that 9 years. Not 7.
Quit being sanctimonious, since I have no need for an education and it was a perfectly legit question.
Interesting you were unable to answer the question so I assume it was a Trabant. Did it come with the 8-track player as well?

You might want to have a read on the DOITRL site for this

Re: Importing Cars
Not sure I can help much beyond what has been said already, but I believe the requirements and regulations are slightly different for a Motorhome

Re: Importing Cars
Is there any difference to the process when importing a vintage car to Australia/ Perth?
Are there specialist companies who deal with vintage car shipping? We have recently inherited a 1933 Riley and want to take it with us.

Re: Importing Cars
Yes, there are differences. You can import any car built prior to 1989 without any restriction, although you must still get a VBS10 Approval to Import which would just be a formality, and the chances are that if you get a favourable valuation the taxes and duty will be negligible even though the marque is probably worth in excess of A$130,000 on the specialist market.
It all depends on the result of the Valuation by an Authorised Valuer here in Australia which you should get done now before you think of anything else (see my article).

Nice and polite reply.
What does that big word mean?

Who said they only lose 10%? Not me, I was merely asking a question...

Re: Importing Cars
I would deffo recommend importing your vehicle if it's rare or classic. We paid about £5k to import DH's 'toy' which we thought was a lot at the time but we have since found out that because there are only 2 others of this particular model in the whole of Oz then it has almost tripled its value. Very happy with that result

Re: car export
Not to mention the Quarantine Entry fees, Customs Entry fees, Air Conditioning fees, AQIS Quarantine fees, Local shipping fees, Customs Levied Entry fees and that's before you get hit with import tax, duty and on-road costs.
Have a read of this...
Importing Your Car to Australia
and if you still feel that you want to go ahead with it I'll give you a very rough estimate of the total cost of importing if you provide the following information.
So an example would be:
