Import tax on tools ??

Hi all,

Just arrived and shipped my joinery tools over via Interparcel.

Trouble is they say they can't deliver them because they have imort duty to be paid to the customs before they can release them...........$544 !!!!!!!

WTF is that all about ???

They are all second hand, most of them just hand tools, and a few older battery drils etc.

All of them have been mine for at least 10 years, in the case of the hand tools 20 years plus.

Most annoyed !!!

Why should I have to pay import duty on my own second hand things ??

Alan.

It's a CON
tell the shippers you will deal with customs direct and can you have a copy of the paperwork showing the duties required.
IF it is legit then you will need the paperwork in order to clarify that the tools are over 12 months old ;)

Hi been racking my brain I am sure we didnt pay anything this end? we shipped all OH tools (also a carpenter) in the container with everything else. I remember taxes but sure it was all in with the shippers fees?

will ask OH when he comes home, hope someone else can answer you in the meantime.

could you contact customs direct for any advice?

no i did not have to pay tax for my carpentry tools when i shipped, but they all had to be checked to make sure they were clean. Possibly someone has got hold of the wrong end of the stick, i would make a few calls to customs with your shipping details to check it out and explain the situation.

I thought this tax was for new tools bought from an over seas company . Although I have made several purchases from the states and have never paid duty on them.

We brought all hub's tools over in our container and didn't have to pay anything. We even had some brand new stuff (leaving pressie which obviously wasn't for me ) and didn't pay duty on them. Can't help you as to why they're asking you to pay but it sounds wrong to me.

Sounds like customs think the tools have been imported for profit, hence the import duty. Ring the parcel company & tell them you've just arrived to live & work here. If they still maintain duty is payable contact customs direct & explain the situation. No duty is payable on property you bring with you when you emigrate, alcohol aside.
Customs are really easy to deal with here, nothing like the U.K. I've imported quite a bit of stuff from U.K & the US I usually drop them an email if there may be a problem. They are friendly & helpful folks;)

That sounds the most likely, especially as they have come by Interparcel, rather than a "normal" shipping company.....

Ive imported thousands of $ worth of tools and if they are new or in aus customs opinion deemed to be new you will be charged GST,end of. Get the customs ref number and deal with it yourself, they are easy to deal with the shipping company are only passing the message on, aussie red tape mate get used to it. PS dont whinge you,ll sound like a pom
