Default Import duty on household items - how strict?

Hi there,

Does anyone kno how strict customs are when applying import duty on new-ish furniture, white goods etc? We'll be moving to Oz in January but need to replace our sofa and washing machine before we leave. My employer is paying for shipping so that's not a problem. However, I don't want to get stung for high import duty costs. Grateful for any advice from out there.

Why not just replace when you get to Australia, save money, save hassle. We even have frontloaders and sofas here too.

Long story short - having spent several years overseas, we've just had to take all our worldly posessions out of long term storage and much of it hasn't fared very well - washing machine is completely knackered, sofa has mysteriously dated into an early 90s gharish nightmare! We're not leaving for Oz until Jan and I don't fancy sitting in front of the TV on orange boxes until then. Cheers for the reply though..!

We bought new stuff, still in the original boxes and didn't get charged anything. Providing you don't take the mick, and have 20 microwaves they don't worry too much (imo anyway).
