>>1. after 18 months less than 90% of skilled immigrants...are in employment
hmmm less than 90% could be 89.9% - so that statistic is misleading.
plus - does that mean that they haven't worked at all in those 18 months, or they havent found a job in their chosen profession, or that at that particular moment in time they were not working but might have had a job for 17 our of the past 18 months?
>>4. immigration reduced the cost of skilled labour to employers
just the laws of demand and supply, i sure feel guilty about employing a Canadian once now, knowing that his presence in the UK meant that everyone had a lower salary
>>5. skilled immigrant taxes subsidised low skilled Australian workers
oh right, and the taxes on my UK income arent going to fund the dole spongers and lower income households here in the UK?
>>6. skilled immigrants increased Australian government tax revenues
rather an obvious point i'd think - but then again it doesn't state how much it increased their expenditure levels - more revenue is not always a good thing...
Statistics are all good and well, but I see nothing in any of those 6 points that particularly worries me.

Yes and from the same article:-
Of the total net gain of skilled people in 2001-02:
About 80 per cent were managers or professionals. The remaining 20 per cent were skilled tradespersons and associate professionals
There was an encouraging increase in the number of nurses we were able to attract in 2001-02, with the net gain jumping to 1,094 from 697 in the previous year.
looks like it's not all brickies and hairdressers then!

Lack of jobs and low wages
We can always come back - but personally I would just like the experience of living somewhere else for a while. Last time I looked living in England isn't so great!!! If we don't like it I know I can get a job as a teacher back here.

My uncle taught me how to skin a 'roo and my father how to cut and break a sheeps neck and what parts to give to the dogs and which parts my mother could cook.
My brother taught me how to make bombs, explosive powders and rockets.
My mother taught me how to drive a car so that I could get it back into the garage before she came home.
My mates mate taught me not to hold detonators by the silvery end while watching it burn down.
I taught myself how to go flat out down steep grades on dirt roads on a bike with no brakes and keep my teeth.
And authors of most of the book I read taught me stuff from astrophysics to zooooology.
So don't tell me that teachers in Aus are not highly prized!
