Hang on in there Arlene - don't give up giving up! (Revolving door theory and all that). Well done for just having the one, but make sure you ditch the rest!

Yes, just cause you had one does not mean youve got to wreck all that giving up time. Flush the rest down the bog and get back to it, or where else are you going to end up!

Don't feel bad Arlene,

Billabong gave up 2 weeks ago after years of 20 a day and I'm sneaking the odd one on the sly with my 18 year old covering me!!

Arlene

You have done well to not smoke for as long as you have. Tomorrow is another day - draw a line under today one fag doesn't mean you have failed - just that you are human. Keep trying and you will get there - Rome wasn't built in a day.

I gave up 4 years ago and even now feel tempted - must confess to the odd puff when out drinking!

My first give up attempt failed after 6 months of cold turkey. Straight back to 20 a day. A year later I tried again and have not smoked tobacco since.

The key to my success was confronting rather than avoiding smoking situations. At Uni that is very hard.

The first month was the worst. I was fidgety and constantly eating snacks. After that it was just a matter of saying no all the time. Loads of people tried to tempt me back. Very hard to resist when drunk.

I do not miss the stink. Most of the health hazards go after the first week. You will be less susceptible to a heart attack after a week.

Please see this as the last cigarette ever. Your kids will be much happier for you for it.

agreed, i too am an ex smoker and i know how hard it is to give up.

i used to keep a packet in the house because if i knew they were there it seemed to have a more calming effect than if i had none, dont know why and this probably would not work for everyone but it worked for me.

could you not take up a hobby to take your mind off it?

the money you are saving on 20 a day is around £30 a week, more than enough to start a new hobby or something you have always wanted to try?

good luck

I was at Uni so all I was doing was racking up more debts. Initially I think I ate 30 GBPs worth of extra food.

Taking up a hobby or sports helps but you still have to confront the smoking situations.

The worst were coffee breaks between lectures
The pub
The walk home
Pre and post exams
By far the worst craving was the post meal one.

At least as a bloke I did not have to contend with PMT as well.

You think you're weak willed? I first gave up successfully for 2 whole years after the birth of my son (17 years ago!) Then following money probs went straight back to the cigs! How weak and stupid was that??? Gave up again while pregnant with my daughter, then started again. Been smoking/giving up/smoking ever since, and my daughter is 14 now!.....But I WILL do it one day.......I will, I will I tell ya!!!!!!

So keep going girl !! You CAN do it! One doesn't count...really it doesn't! Just call it a 'reward' for all those months you've gone without then forget it even happened, pat yourself on the back for being such a good girl and carry onto the next 7 months.
Next time the urge strikes, just think of pathetic little ole me and say to yourself...."I'm not going to end up like that sad muppet!" ;)
Hang in there!!!!!!!! :)

I stopped drinking coke for 3 months, then I tried it again. It tasted terrible. Now, I stay away from it for good...

Perhaps you'll see how disgusting and unhealthy a smoking habit is too after so long? One mistake isn't so bad... just try again tomorrow.

:D
