It's some sort of cocoon by the look of it. Don't know what type of moth/butterfly or what though

Either a hornet or wasps nest. We've just discovered one right outside our front door. They are very aggressive as well. can't use our front door at the moment!

Yes they are a type of hornets nest.
They are very aggressive when building them.
When you break one open they are full of dead flys and spiders to feed their young.
I always spray them and try and get the bugger that is building them but you have to be quick and run like hell afterwards.

It could be army grub. They eat your grass.

Jo

Found this.

GRUBS AND DISEASES

The main grub in the area is the Lawn Army Worm. This grub only affects lawns in summer. Apart from areas of dying lawn, the main indicator of the presence of Army Worm is a red wasp with a long sting hovering over the lawn (these are predators of the army worm), birds (Ibis or Plovers pecking into the lawn), or a build-up of yellow cocoons on your house eaves.

Use a stiff brush to clean them off or they will stain any paintwork etc
