If you were to buy or rent in Brisbane CBD?
What area would you look at? Which area's would be best suited to;
A couple who like to drink, eat out, get some work, anything, do not need a car, can get the train to the beaches, can get out and about without the need to drive?
But it needs to be a nice area, safe and sound, and quiet etc,
Budget, $500 bucks a week rent, fully furnished?

We did that for 3 years living in Fortitude Valley (close to the border of New Farm). I would also throw in New Farm and Tenerife as they were the other areas we went eating and drinking that were close to the CBD.

In 1996 just 3882 people lived in the cbd. It has been exploding in recent years and now has over 13,000. This puts it's population higher than surrounding suburbs like new farm. Because of this you now find supermarkets etc have sprung to service these people and Brisbane is far busier at night. Another 77 story residential tower is opening soon with an even taller one just started so the inner boom looks set to continue. Just try and avoid the towers where the oaks group have purchased serviced apt rights.
As well as the cbd, without transport you would be best to live on the spine that runs from teneriffe to west end. Look up the city glider bus route and live somewhere along it.

Brisbane City 4000
Fortitude Valley, Bowen Hills, Newstead 4006
New Farm 4005
Here is the city glider route map: http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/2010%...ityglider2.pdf
As polly said check the flood maps. Only affected on the fringes near the river but worth checking even if last time we had that much rain in the catchment was 1893 you could be the unlucky type

Be great to live at southbank and will give you access to the whole cultural precinct plus west end and the cbd.
St Lucia is a lot quieter place but the ciitycat would get you to the city nicely and you would have access to the uni of qld and toowong.
Would check flood maps for both apts just in case.

I would give serious consideration as to whether you really want fully furnished.
Most rentals in Brisbane will be unfurnished and you'll have a lot more choice if you go that way.
Save yourself $50 a week or so and a headache looking for a place and instead get a truckful of IKEA "starting home" stuff (or trawl eBay for 2nd hand stuff). It wont be much more expensive.
South Bank, Roma St, Fort Valley, New Farm , Spring Hill, Kangaroo Point, West End - are all packed full of modern unit blocks and all spitting distance from the CBD.

I'd suggest South Bank (for nice apartment style living) or West End would suit you. Plenty going on in those areas. And the local coppers are very friendly

I'll chime in for what it's worth... Southbank would be my first choice. Definitely go for unfurnished.
I don't believe you have any flooding concerns at Southbank. Some apartments have their carspaces located in a private section of the large public underground carpark... these spaces were flooded and inaccessible for a long time. But these flood events are pretty rare really.
My only (pretty minor) concerns with renting at southbank would be street level noise. You get a fair few people walking up and down Grey street at all hours. Friends of mine certainly made this comment when they lived in a unit facing grey street.
Something like this is a little pricey but 154m2 is pretty big for a unit.
