Default I think I may be kidding myself ...

Right need some feed back here.

I have a load of IT disciplines namely in Databases. I can pretty much turn my hand to most things.

However here is my wee Aussie dilema , I dont want to live in Melbourne if I can help it I would rather live along the coast Ocean grove to Angelsea as an example.

But my Job research is pointing me towards Melbourne. as it looks as if my IT employment options are all in Melbourne or in the Melbourne area. Once my job search leaves Melbourne (or any large city) the jobs disappear.

So my question is this are there IT jobs on the coast?

Very little and it would be desk top style support that wouldn't pay.

Only other option is find a job in the city that lets you work from home.

Yes this is a tricky one as 99% of IT Database related jobs will be in the main cities.

As a rule there will be loads of jobs in Sydney and Melbourne, about half as many in Brisbane then half as many again in Adelaide/Perth.

If the coast is important to where you want to live then maybe consider Perth? Its unique in the way that the city and coast are so close in Australia and there is always job opportunity's whatever your occupation.

(Please nobody hijack this thread with a Perth is rubbish/good argument)

All I can suggest is that you concentrate your search on Geelong - you probably have already though??

There are certainly a few large employers around there, manufacturing mostly but some retail as well.....it shouldn't be completely impossible to find a suitable IT role.

Finding work in any of the smaller coastal towns would be pretty much impossible though I'd guess.

Just realised that you were asking about the coast in Victoria (not anywhere in Australia) so ignore my last post. I can't really offer any advice with jobs there, hopefully someone else can help though.

There are a few people that commute from Ocean Grove.

It's not that much longer a commute than Frankston, which is in Melbourne.

Geelong Bypass is going in as well, if it isn't already, which will knock another 10-15 mins of the trip, or you can catch an Express from Geelong.

Got to say I'm surprised and almost refreshed that a UK person is baulking at the idea of a long commute.... disliking long commutes is usually an Aussie trait.

Best solution, find your house get a quick job, then look for one closer to your coastal home, once your accepted by the Aussie Job Market.

Lived in Dublin for enough years to get sick of commando runs to work involving back roads etc...taking an hour each way if I can avoid it I will.

Hmm Geelong is pretty much where the search is based as i have a large amount of IT experience in a manufacturing enviroment.

That said I am not IT to the Core. We dicussed this further last night and we reckon we will hire a camper van in 2weeks and have a tour of the greater Melbourne area.
