Hi Joanne
What sort of web site do you need ?

A large one, or just a single page. There are various different options around. With comparative prices

If you want a .com.au, then you also need to register the name in Australia as a business name. Thats about $200 for a 3 year registration.

The .com option is cheaper, but your site will not get found if someone does a search using google.com.au.

PM me if you need any specific advice.

Take a look at www.webfirm.com.au they specialise in small business websites and IMO their sites really do look good. Very fast loading, nice graphics, good color schemes etc. All things you need to keep customers coming back to your site.

I'm nothing to do with them; just seen their work and was impressed with it. I've no idea how much they charge.

I'd advise not getting a website hosted in Australia if at all possible. The US, Canada and the UK in that order, to be on the safe side.

If you need help we have associations with lots of web developers and hosts.

Currently, dependant on the type of website you are going for:

Please note for a .com.au website you must have an ABN number etc.

For a .com domain try www.oneandone.co.uk

For a .com.au I use www.netregistry.com.au

If you have ideas on a small website, then you can do a couple of things.

Get a copy of frontpage 2003 , this allows you to design and transfer your website to the internet.

Get a template for your website, perhaps try www.templatemonster.com

Purchase a domain name. See above for .com.au , get a server package , this will give you upload password and user name and away you go.

Other option is to do a search on www.google.com.au and look at some sites, at the bottom of each page will generally be the nam of the developer or webmaster with links to their own websites.

If you did a generic search on Perth, im sure you could find both sites that are slick and were developed locally.

Thats the best recomendation you could wish for.

Steve

Failing that give me a $1000 and ill doya a site

Connectivity reasons mainly. 80% of the world's 'Net traffic is in the US. Australia is 150-250ms away from these places.

Also, I've compared things like co-locating, dedicated hosting etc, and Australia is a ripoff for that sort of thing, especially with the usage fees.

So, speed and price are the two reasons.

But if your target audience is in Australia then a local provider would provide a much better connection than one in the US.

I had to move my UK clients from servers in the US to servers in the UK because the performance became so bad when the US came online.

More users, more traffic, slower connections!

I don't mean to get up Timber Floor Au's nose, but his advice re: using Frontpage and an online template is a bad idea. Do you want people who don't use Internet Explorer to be able to buy from your site?

Frontpage is notorious for creating non-compliant, bloated and messy code.

Also, do you want it to look like 10000 other sites that've used the same template?

Can people buy from your site with a text-mode browser? What about if they disable Java or javascript? Will it look the same on a Mac as it does on your PC?

Questions any website builder in the making needs to ask themselves.

Sorry, I've been writing HTML and CSS practically since either were invented and have dealt with these pitfalls many, many times.

That's why I suggested Register; they seme to understand this.

Good luck, and if I wasn't so busy, I'd probably help you myself with site building.

I noticed that no one replied to this. I had the same thing happen, i had 7 emails to say a post i made had been replied to, but not 1 showed up, until about an hour later, and then it was just ONE that appeared.
It must have been a glitch in the system. I also noticed very few actual posts during that time frame.

Listen

And i will make comment here...

Frintpage is not the crappy software it once was, or indeed maligned by Dreamweaver advocates. It now offers full css compliancy and is simple to use. ON THAT note that is why i suggested it !!

Templates are the easiest WAY FOR A NOVICE WEB BUILDER TO CREATE A SITE !!! NO arguments

Furthermore you can check when publishing the compliance of your site on most if not all web browsers, the old saying You cant please all the people all the time !!

Also getting an ecommerce site is straightforward and easily integrated into Golive Dreamweaver and Frontpage .

An individual looking to gain a web presence could do little wrong in using frontpage 2003.

Also all design software , be it dreamweaver or frontpage , can be designed in either wysiwyg or hard coded in Html.

Fp i must concede was renowned for bad coding conversion thru html, but in recent years and the introduction of fp2003 its pretty slick.

Java script and css are easily integrated into both FP and DW

Moreover its vital not just to have a website but to promote it and optimize it extensively.

Folllowing The FLORIDA incident late oct via google, complying with web structure <not html> is of vital importance in web placement, amongst other vital pre requisites.

I for one find it very rewarding, when we optimize one of our sites and sit back watching it get further up the rankings.

Not so happy when it slithers back down... argghhh

Thats where doing your own site can be a bonus and cost LESS which i believe was the original comment within the thread !!!

cpc and seo's are just two nastys that will rip u off and take your money HAPPILY !
