No idea where to get a good curry, the local here serves up gelatinous stodge. Get yourself a Madphur Jaffrey cookbook, you can't go wrong and it's much better than buying it here.

We had a good curry about 5 years ago in Sydney - it was at the Nawaz Flavour of India in Glebe. Probably a bit out of your way though!

Mumtaz Mahal in Caringbah is quite nice, there is a restaurant and they also do takeaway but won't deliver out this far so hubby has to go and fetch.

We always have a curry at the curryhouse on Circular Quay when in Sydney: it's just about under the Cahill expressway on the corner of Philip Street.

Cannot believe how oz cannot make a decent curry with the amount of immigrants in the Country is it because the aussies like their curries sweet with the harsh spices not cooked properly?

Red, green, Penang and massaman curries are great here.

Because it isn't 'british curry' which only exists in britain funnily enough. Far better available than brit curry.

To avoid brit curry missing syndrome I suggest taking up Thai food. North Indian Curries just send us nuts here and are probably best left as a treat for when we go visit the UK.

I second Taste of Nawaz in Glebe, proper UK curries. Also Himalaya in Five Dock, Inner West Sydney, no frills but brilliant.

Not true, I have visited India twice and where I go in Brum for a curry that taste exactly the same if you know where to go, cooked on the bone with just nans and chappaties even the Indians themselves use them to eat out.

There are actually quite a few options for a decentish curry to get your fix. There are several curry places in Cleveland Street in Surry Hills, a few North Indian places dotted around in Oxfrod St, in the CBD there is restaurant called Jaipur (in Elizabeth St and York St) which has a wide variety and if you fancy a trip to the west side of town you will find a whole strip of restaurants in Harris Park and a few places in Parramatta CBD.
I would say for the range go to Jaipur but Harris Park restaurants are that little bit more authentic but if I'm honest nothing beats a British curry.
If anything what I do is buy the ready made meals in the boxes that you just heat up. If you find an Indian grocery or even if your local supermarket stocks the boxes, it's happy days as you can have one whenever you like.

Unsurprisingly we have had quite a few threads on this, so you might want to do a quick search.
I continue to be unimpressed but our favourites are Cumin at Crow's Nest and Maya on Cleveland St, Surry Hills. Bizarrely we've had better food from Maya at home than we have in the upstairs restaurant (and the service was shocking).
Nilgiri's, also at Crow's Nest, I wasn't so taken with but people do rave about it so maybe we chose badly.
We also really liked Bukhara at Double Bay the one time we chanced upon it - that's Mauritian-Indian. Hmmm, must go back there.

I see you said you're heading north. Haven't tried it but this place looks like a possibility.

"We at the Spice Avenue, Birkdale take pride in our quality and high standards of traditional Balti cooking. We specialise in a variety of Balti dishes cooked in the traditional way using only the finest and freshest of ingredients to ensure your complete satisfaction. Although many Balti names resemble curries which are served in the Australian-Indian restaurants, there is no similarity to the taste or cooking methods which are used in The Spice Avenue. This formula of cooking and presentation has been practiced in our UK branch since 1980.
In comparison to the days when the curry experience was a late night wrestle with a chicken vindaloo, cooled by a liberal amount of chilled lager, the Balti experience is one of subtlety yet spicy where you can taste the flavor of the food rather than the heat of the chilies.
At the Spice Avenue like any other genuine Balti restaurant in the UK there is no need to dress to impress. Good food overrides formality and décor. The aim is to make you feel at home whilst enjoying the food and drinks of your choice at a price that is easy on your pocket."
Regarding Sydney, the curry house opposite the Lord Nelson (like it was meant to be) is a good spot for a decent pint followed by a curry. Argly and Kent in The Rocks.
