Default I moved at last!

I moved House on Friday – and this is going to sound really odd but I had a whale of a time. The last three times we have moved in England we had the normal Friday thing – all get up and play musical house, last in the chain gets to sleep in the moving truck with not enough time to get in the new house!

Now I know it is not always like that but that is how it worked for us because of not having the luxury of having somewhere to stay in between or store the mountains of crap I like to call my worldly possessions.

Anyway as I was saying I just have had a really nice experience – we did not have the numbers of mates to help us out so hiring a couple of trucks and doing it ourselves was not an option. I used a removalist firm. I did attempt to try this in the UK but the cost was over and above anything I could raise easily – over 2000 pounds quoted three years ago. We had a firm over here for the day $1200 – we did the packing and they moved everything brilliantly, not a mark on my stuff or the walls of either house. I stood and directed as they moved every item into place. The guys were a delight and very very friendly. My new suite turned up on time from the store as did the beds I ordered elsewhere.

I had a day before the move to get in and clean the new place and a day after to go back and clean the old rental. Everyone has been a star and I feel really really happy in my new owned place. We rented for a year here in Sydney (Upper North Shore - St Ives) to make sure it was everything we wanted from the area and decided we liked it so much we moved 1.2km down the road. It has not been bad renting for over a year, but it does come to a point when you want to get things done your own way or buy the right piece for the right place. Some sadness came from not being able to show the family round straight away, but most are visiting sometime in the next year. Friends from Aus came through Friday night and some people I have met through this site came on Sunday – I had a great time and appreciate the support from other mad folks.

I am now in the process of opening boxes I last had packed April 2002! Really did I bring this much? (I nearly filled a 40ft). Still I am finding excuses to buy a few more pieces though.

From the initial move over and some of the hassle with that (mainly emotions) I really enjoyed myself this weekend. That feeling of owning my house (bar the bloody great mortgage!) has definitely helped cement the feeling that we are ‘home’. Good luck to all those moving around wherever it may be to.

Cheers

Hi Neighbour,

We are in West Pymble and really enjoying it. It’s a brilliant area, isn’t it? We are renting at the moment and probably not going to look to buy until October time.

Got a 3 year old, and he just loves the space we have in the garden, compared to our tiny garden back in the UK.

Yes Pymble isn't far at all and a very nice part of Upper North Shore too. I also work in Chatswood and hubby works in Gordon so we do tend to stick round this area!

I use the train line and have been pleasently surprised at ease of use and the costs. Buses to my area aren't as good but we have not felt the need to get a second car yet, which is amzing for a family of two cars and a motorbike in the UK. But the bike might be replaced soon, Andy has withdrawal.

I like your website! Great idea, lets the UK ones see how it is going, must do something similiar now I have the busy business over and have no more excuses.....ah well might plan the house warming for the warmer weather......and then visits and then Christmas.....

Do you get the North Shore Times - great property listing and cause you only have to go to the open houses at the specific times you can browse looking for houses with less pressure than making the appointments in the UK. Believe it or not cause of the types of house (so many different) we have been looking for a year and even more seriously the past four months. I agree about the garden sizes in the main. The place we rented was so huge the trampoline looked like a postage stamp in comparison. I will admit this one has less flat garden space, we found our two did not use it so much. We have traded in some of the space for a bigger house a large rock and a pool. (Yes I know the brit thing to do and all the warnings are noted that we will be naffed off with it after a while, but our kids are thrilled for now and my Uncle in Perth said he only filled his in after the kids left home). I have found a few firms advertising here about specialist pool fillers (mean you get to use the space where the pool was but later house buyers can redig it more easily).

Watching the kids freeze themselves on Saturday gave us a laugh.

Cheers

I am glad to see all your hard work and tough times are paying off, and that you have even found house moving fun!

Hi Sandra

We are in Castle Hill at the moment and are renting. We have just decided to find our own place in Cherrybrook now as this is where the kids go to school and they are settled there. Glad to hear you had a good experience. We haven't started looking yet as we have got to see a financial advisor first to see how much we can borrow!! I'm looking foward to looking around houses and hopefully having so much choice. There are loads on the market around here. I think we'll have to get a removal firm in to move us as we have lots of large peices of furniture now. What was the company you used? would you recommend them?

cheers

Mandy
