Mayor caught on film resigns
By Jennifer Sexton and Amanda Hodge
December 21, 2004
THE Sydney mayor captured by a hidden camera accepting a thick wad of $100 bills from a developer stood down yesterday while the state's corruption watchdog investigates the case.
Just hours after The Australian published images from the footage, taken earlier this year, Strathfield Mayor Alfred Tsang issued a statement saying that he would stand aside to preserve the "reputation" of the council, in Sydney's inner west, and the "dignity" of the office.
The 12-minute film, leaked to The Australian, shows Mr Tsang being handed several thousand dollars from local developer Michael Saklawi.
The money was exchanged about four months ago during a lunch at which the pair discussed a development project involving a council-owned carpark in South Strathfield.

Saw it yesterday had to smile, money buys anything here, we got our kids into a prestigious school with a backhander to the building fund, there were no places but some suddenly appeared with the swift swish of a chequebook.
Theyll be holding thier hands out this year tho, we have a serious complaint regarding bullying and the boys may be back in State schools which tackle these issues very quickly.

Design rules won't block out corruption
December 21, 2004
The Strathfield Mayor saga is just a foreword to next year's ICAC hearings, writes Anne Davies.
There's a lot more to come in the story of Strathfield Council.
The video footage of the mayor, Alfred Tsang, being handed a wad of money must horrify residents of Strathfield. It will also confirm many ratepayers' worst fears about how development decisions are made in Sydney.
But stand by for many more revelations during next year's hearings before the Independent Commission Against Corruption. Other inner-west councils are within the commission's sights. Bribery has to involve at least two parties, which means a number of developers in the inner west must be feeling distinctly queasy.

How did Blunket know that the women he was sleeping with did not look like a pig with clothes on?

Real Aussies??? what are real aussies? Real aussies from my admittedly sketchy and somewhat limited understanding includes all these ethnic aussies. Some folk, it seems, still have this misconceived notion that Australia is largely anglosaxon - actually it is one of the most multi-cultural countires in the world. No comment on whether this level of multi-cultural works well as a society merely pointing out that real aussies are from many many backgounds.
