Wow thanks for posting that Herrchook! We have been out here nearly 5 months and haven't got round to going to a centrelink. I will do so now, do I have to have OH with me as he's the earner or can I sort it all out on my own?

Wow,
after dragging my heels I finally got around to going online and attempting to work out what we were entitled to from Centrelink as a family. Each time I called with my daft questions they were polite and helpful and when I had to supply visas and birth certs etc in person they were quick and efficient. And the result - less than 2 weeks after them having all the relevant information, I have had over 6 months worth of back dated family assistance deposited into my account . And to think I didn't think we'd get anything. For all those out there procastinating with all those forms - get on with it, it's soooo worth it. :D:thumbsup: John and Stella |

So I'm guessing that this isn't the thread to say....jeez these migrants, they come over here and get loads of benefits ;)
I know, if you are entitled to it, you are entitled to it...I do wonder though as to how many people formerly living in Britain would be complaining about newly-arrived Poles (eg) who claim for child benefit etc, yet when they get to Oz they are on the bandwagon. Just an observation. (Me - the abuse I got when I arrived in Britain was not about jobs or benefits...bizarrely it was that I'd come to the UK to steal all the men. LMAO!) |

I'm all for anyone and everyone obtaining such entitlements. I'm not about to start such a thread. It was this thread that raised the issue in my mind, and therefore I suspect in others'. A search of my postings over the last three years will reveal that I am highly unlikely to personally slate or attack any poster, nor to start a thread on any issue deemed to be contentious. |

You do make a valid point and it's one you hear on BE a lot about wanting to move to Aus to get away from immigrants claiming benefits etc. Not for one minute aiming this at Herchook - I claimed all the benefits I was entitled to when I got here too and will do so again if I'm ever entitled to anything again LOL! Can I just reiterate again that when dealing with Centrelink always jot down the receipt number, person's name and a summary of the conversation. I found myself in a position of having to pay them back money in the thousands - on two occasions - because they had overpaid me (they admitted they'd made a mistake - I'd always kept them up to date with earnings etc - but it was basically tough luck, had to pay them back). I know a few people who have been through similar things and they are usually the ones who can afford it least, like single parents (which I was at the time). If you claim at the end of the year you should be fine, less room for error. I also found, after dealing with them for about five years, that you will get conflicting advice by different people every time you call them. I am extremely thankful I no longer have to deal with them! |

I wasn't suggesting that herrchook was one of those people. I'm just amazed at the number of people who I have encountered in the UK, in Australia and in the USA who feel that migrants are not entitled to anything.
