The area of Redfern to avoid is Eveleigh Street and the streets surrounding it (known as 'the block'). Doubt if many Sydney uni students live there.

I would nip out for a ciggie during the day and soon learned to take one ciggie and no money with me, as it could be quite threatening at times. I went through a pack of 30 in about 10 minutes one day, as I gave one bloke a ciggie, then all of a sudden I was inundated with people scabbing.
The other side of the tracks is great though, spent many a lunch time shopping at some of the outlets.
