Hello all!

So i'm finally making the big journey. Quitting my job, selling/giving away most all my belongings and travelling to Sydney with as much as I can carry! Exciting but also a bit nerve racking! I don't know a soul in Sydney and am keen to make some friends. You guys/gals do meet-ups regularly? If so, are they diverse groups? I ask cuz I'm not actually a britexpat, I am a yank (to be expat) currently in Boston. Britexpat got me through the visa process; i sware i was checking here nearly, if not, every day to see current processing times and such!

anyway, would love to share a pint (or numerous). i will be looking to establish some sort of social circle for myself especially with those in a similar situation (I jut turned 31, am single with no kids).

PS. I will be unemployed upon arrival so i if anyone can help me land a job in a biomedical research lab, i'll will buy you many beers!

Hey Jake,

We land on 18th September so will be in a similar boat (or plane...!)! Whereabouts are you planning on living? We're gonna be heading to the North Shore (probably Manly) as my other half's a surfer and we can't be too far from a beach. We do have kids so hope that won't put you off, but if you fancy chilling, surfing (or just getting in the water!), drinking beer and enjoying Sydney and Australian life then we'd love to catch up!

Good friends of ours are from Boston... well, still live there... so we feel we already know it!

well i was thinking of looking to live somewhere in either the eastern or northern suburbs, but i'm not real sure what to do as i won't have a job on arrival. it would suck to later land a job that happened to be pretty inconvenient to where i live.

by my age (just turned 31) most of my friends have ankle biters or close to having them. i like to say i'm an equal oppurtunist, though i'd like to meet some singles as well. i'll need someone with which to rave about how the great the single lifestyle is, right?

i've never even surfed. been to Aus 3 times already and havent even tried. but to be fair, its been winter every time. will have to give it a go at some point.

i posted on yanksdownunder and someone responded talking bout going in Sept and something about Boston. who says that was you or you other half?

let me know how your move goes. i'm getting a little scared. so much to do. so little time.

We're not from the US. We're actually Brits currently living in Italy (sounds a lot more glamorous than it is....).

We're looking at the Northern suburbs too. Possibly around Hornsby. We're not arriving until the end of October as OH has to work 3 months notice, and I'm afraid that we too have 2 kids. I'll look forward to reading how you guys get on when you arrive.

Im single, no kids but older than you! However, theres a good social life here and we do not just stick to brits!! see you when you arrive!

Yeah, check out the meet up threads, as suggested above! In terms of work...I would maybe suggest you contact Kelly scientific...their office is based in North Sydney. I have worked through them before in the Uk, and had a meeting with them in Sydney (shortly before I found a job elsewhere)...I have always found them pretty good if you have a specialist field and experience. Otherwise, just keep checking Seek.com.

Thanks Emmis, will definitely do that. OH is a paddler, mostly slalom and recreational white water, but he's excited about learning to surf now.

Sydney Thursday CBD Drinks

There is a fair group of us that meet for drinks every Thursday evening in the CBD. It's not just Brits, there is a fair swathe of Aussies, South Africans, Irish and have had the occasional German too.

We are mostly in our late 20s/30s, and very few of us have kids (though one couple is now expecting). It's not all couples either - a good mix of young thinning couples and singles.

Looks like Thursday the 8th of October will be the first one after you arrive, so feel free to come along and meet up.

We'll be starting off in Dural staying with a cousin and then we'll look around for somewhere to rent/buy depending on jobs. The thing about the Hornsby area is that there is a fast train to the CBD and good road links North to Newcastle (other family) and West to the slalom site at Penrith. We'll see though, need to check out schools as our eldest is due to start this year (so Jan out there).

Weird, almost a sense of de ja vu from this thread. I arrived over 3rd October last year. I'm 31, single and no kids too lol. Although I'm Irish. Be sure to come along to the meetups. Nice bunch of people.
