I am a pensioner by Uk standards but not it would seem by Australian law. I have tried to get a concession card but have been told I do not qualify for one. Can I not get anything discounted .. I .e. travel?
I have already said in another post that I have my bridging visa..will it all change when my spouse visa comes through? Also if I get married will that make any difference or none at all.. my partner is younger than I am.

You should be eligible for the seniors card.

This card does not entitle you to low priced prescriptions etc.

If you are a resident and on a lowish income you may be eligible for a health care card. Check out the centrelink site.

Also check out http://www.nationalseniors.com.au/ebiz/

For the over 50's. Various discounts for $29 py

Not sure how good it is, but I have been told it is well worth it.

I know one person got $25 off their CTP via that, so almost all of the annual fee.

Dunno, I am over 60 and get nothing. I will be entitled to an ACT seniors card which will give me discount on buses and in the cinema but I have to not be working full time for that and at the moment I am full time. All states have different eligibility criteria.

With seniors here in Vic we get cheap train tickets, free train trip once a year, coffee at the coffee bar, meals at the pub twenty percent off, quite a lot of discount stuff, more than the over fifties seniors thingy which we also belong.

Well worth having.

Don't you have to be a permanent resident to qualify for the senior's card? If you are only on a bridging visa you are not yet a PR. Check the eligibility criteria for your state.

Agreed

Also even the Commonwealth Seniors card, which was for those who don't get a government (Centrelink) pension is now being means tested.

I just know that friends of ours are here on a retirement investor visa which is TR and they can't get a senior's card because of their residency status.

My friend Aussi just got the seniors cards for and if its means tested they would not have got it

I know that in the UK they recognise our senior stuff so how about using UK card or whatever you have here.

For reduction in rates and power bills you need to have a centrelink pension card.

Things have changed a lot now and people its always worth getting an interview at centrelink because we thought we would be entitled to nothing and the way they work our finances out we ended up with a small pension from them which also gives us the cheaper medical, rates, electricity, gas, water etc. Well worth having.
