I just got off the phone with my Mum in Perth and she said this winter they have had winds up to 120km/h which can do quite a bit of damage. You will occasionally get hailstones in Perth, but not that often. In NT and QLD they have cyclones which are quite hazardous. If you want to check out one of the worst cyclones that hit Darwin 29 years ago - http://www.ntlib.nt.gov.au/tracy/advanced/Tracy.html
Where are you moving to?

They get really bad thunderstorms in N Queensland. Fortunately no big earthquakes though!

A couple of years back Sydney got hit by a hailstorm with golf ball size lumps of ice. It caused one of the biggest insurance payouts in Australian history with the damage to cars.

There was a storm here a few weeks back which knocked over a few trees but nothing that the UK has not experienced.

When it rains here it rains hard. The thunder storms are spectacular and the streets turn into rivers for a short while.

The other hazard is bush fires which are becoming more frequent as global warming changes Australia's weather patterns.

The north gets hit by cyclones which are just as powerful as a hurricane.

Tired:

Oz is a big place! (It's almost as big as Brazil)

Therefore asking about the weather is rather like asking what the weather is like Spain to Greenland!

Cyclonic depressions are found anywhere in the tropical regions and they migrate to the extra-tropical areas when formed They are called hurricanes in the N Atlantic, Typhoons in the Pacific, Cyclones in Oz and so on - but they're all the same beasts and pack similar punches. One devastated Darwin years ago.

They don't get down as far as Sydney, though.
