How much does it cost to emigrate?

Hi there

Can anyone help me to find the post within this forum listing the consideration of what emigration costs. I have seen posts of this type but am struggling to find them on the search. Such things listed were Pet transportation and costs of Removal Companies etc.

Hope you can help

Many thanks

Jenny

It is an expensive business, here are my costs:

Visa related costs including medicals - about GBP2k. This is cheap though, many people pay double or triple this. I didn't use an agent and my skills assessment was a cheap one. Also only two people for medicals, these are not cheap either.

Removal of container - about GBP5k

Pet transportation / quarantine - about GBP 3k for two cats.

Flights for us - GBP4k for two one way business class flights

Initial accommodation - AUD 7.5k for five weeks in a city centre service apartment

Total not much off GBP 20k.

These are just my costs. Not saying it is the same for everyone.

Thanks for the response. I do find it difficult to search on this site for some reason. I have tried every combination of search option. I know I have in the past come across some very detailed lists of costs and I dont believe I am missing anything major out in my budgeting.

The costs are mad aren't they?! We just had our meds. Nice little earner there for 1.5 hours work!

I have a dog and have budgeted £1800 or thereabouts. What size container is that for?

My goodness, your accommodation was steep...

The pet cost depends on size of dog. If your dog is cat size then your estimate could be quite reasonable.

I don't think my accommodation was expensive, works out at just over $200 a night in a serviced apartment in Sydney city centre.

:o Sorry, I misread that was AUD. Its late and I have been doing too much thinking. Going a bit :banghead: by now.

I think for me the most difficult finances to really get to grips with are those associated with taxes, capital gains tax situation, stuff that I dont really understand here, let alone in Australia. Feel like my head might explode any minute. Sorry to sound pathetic.

Emmigrating does not trigger any capital gains tax or any other additional tax costs.

By the time we arrived in December `08 we`d spent about 11000 pound. That includes Container,Visa(meds, skills assess, etc) and Flights for a family of 4. Tax on any money we transfered here was never a question.

All up, a family of 5 to move from a 5 bed house in Warwickshire to Melbourne cost us about 24,000 GBP all up with flights, shipping, and everything else. Including the first few weeks rental upon arrival. Then buying a car on top of that....

No idea what that means.

I have already said just over $200 per night in a serviced apartment.

Not sure what is so surprising about that.

What would you expect to pay for a furnished, serviced apartment in Sydney.

Sounds right to me, too. We paid $230 per night for the same. We did manage to negotiate a little off per night after a week (so ended up paying $200 per night) as we ended up staying for 6 weeks.

Re: How much does it cost to emigrate?

We emigrated from the West Midlands to Adelaide in October 2009. Here's a breakdown of our major costs:
  • Spouse visa: £800
  • Shipping freight: £2,200 for a shared 20ft container with door to door service (Allied Pickfords)
  • Shipping insurance: £450 (Letton Percival)
  • Air freight: £400 (Allied Pickfords)
  • Air fares: £1,300 (Cathay Pacific)
  • Family cat: £2,000 for a comprehensive door-to-door service (Golden Arrow)
  • Customs & AQUIS fees: £120

    Total: £7,270

We had already bought a house here, so we didn't have to pay for accommodation.

:)

yeah of course, sorry i was being dumb, 250 a night is not unusual. I remember paying 600 a week for a nice apartment in manly so i was thinking, oh abut 2 grand but appreciate rates vary.

kirrabilli house is where PM lives :)
