how much does it cost to emigrate

Could anyone please give me an idea of the overall figure (in british pounds)of how much it costs to get to melbourne for a family of 3 with a dog.
we are looking to move and are at present looking at an employer sponsored visa.
a rough breakdown of costs would be very useful before we start getting our own quotes.
thanks to anyone who replies.

I can give you an idea to Brisbane which wouldnt be much different to Melbourne.
£3500 for a 20ft container if you take furniture.
£1500 for small dog, if I take him.
Cost about £600 for visa medicals (family of 4) and £35 each for police checks.never paid visa application costs as employer met these. but you can be looking at couple of grand if you use an agent.
£2500 for one way flights.
approx £2000 for short term accomadation for 4 weeks on arrival. when you find long term you could pay up to £1000 for bond and 1st month rent. connection charges for utilities. essentials if you still waiting for container. fees starting children in school such as uniform and books or private if you go down that road.
when you arrive you will need car rental then money to buy a car.
probably loads i have missed but i reckon it could cost you anything between £15-20000.
its definately difficult if you have not sold a house like myself.

The employer should pay for a lot of the moving costs- certainly shipping, storage, and airfare. That's the deal I got when I moved from the UK to the US. However, there are still plenty of extra costs. Biggest is accommodation - especially whatever temporary housing you have before you move into something more permanent can such away a lot of money. Do you have housing arranged yet?

deffo shop around, you reduce the costs by lots if u do shop around, maybe putting up with public transport for a while until you have money for a car, putting kids into state school instead of private, shopping for what you need, not what you want!!!!

Good luck... people go on far less and come good in the end.

Well they might, but they don't have to. Mine paid the same towards the costs as they would do it they paid for somebody to relocate between Sydney and Melbourne, about $11,000. It helped but it was only a small dent in the overall costs.

The costs of setting up home again shouldn't be underestimated.
