There's a lot of talk that the cost of living is relatively the same, looking at the general gist of things, but i was wondering (as i do, too often) how much council tax you banana benders are paying!!??

We currently live in a 4 bed and we pay 155 pounds a month (354audollars at todays rate-ish)

Acerage was cheap, about $1900 a year, but we had no mains sewerage, just a lovely worm farm (biocycle) that did the job (it worked) so obviously cheaper.

Just looked a a duplex (half a house) in buddina, rates are almost $4000 a year but it was beachfront so the land value would be high, I assume a free standing house then was double that. Our vacant land - have worked out when we build will be around $2200 a year providing they dont go up (as if).

Think rates in general are cheaper than UK, but water charges here are set to rise dramatically.

About $500 per quarter for a 600 sq m block in Holland Park (Southside). That includes rates, sewerage and water charges. The rates are based on the average land value over the last 3 years so the more the land is worth the higher the rates.

Ours are < $900 per annum only if you pay within the 4 week time frame though as you save an extra $50 for prompt payment.
For that we get our bins emptied, that's it! No mains sewer, no reticulated supply, no public transport, no library etc. etc. In fact they mended a few roads in the area a couple of years ago & put a $200 roads levy on top of the rates to pay for it

$4k per annum for 7 acres beachside

Mate in Surfers pays hefty rates+ body corp fees.

Body corp fees can cripple you, so be aware if you are buying within a complex.

we are $2000 a year for a 750sqm block with the land being valued at $175k this year.

I was thinking the same thing. We pay $1100 per year for ours!

Mine are $710 per year on a 911 meter block (valued last year at $192k)

Not sure if all the states bill in the same way...i.e. do rates, sewerage, water, fire service all come on the same bill? The $500 or so per qtr for Brisbane includes all that e.g.

when I think back to what I paid in the UK its cheap for us lol

we would have been over $3000 a year for a 3 bed mid terrace with no garage etc, in a small village...with no police station......absolutely sod all so I feel this is a good price for what we got...oh and a sea view

Rural here is a lot cheaper....but I prefer where we are

Most people quoting here are living in the prime bits, like us mostly lived in the tourist bits, you pay a lot of rates for beautiful mega million dollar council parks, barbeque areas that need full time staff to constantly clean them, carparks the council vaccumn daily lovely roads so the tourists dont see the pot holes 10 mins further in. I bet you dont get anything like our rate bills if you lived somewhere like 3 hours west.

Some of the development here costs mega bucks, just bought a house closer to brisbane, the councils building a new pier on the beach right opposite, nothing fancy mind, just an artificial reef under it, 3 undercover areas, mode lighting whatever that is, I know the reef will be lit up at night, upgrade the entire parkland for about a klm long a new promonade, all this is right outside the door, this thread has me worrying now what the hell the rates will be then.

Our quarterly bills are about $650 and that includes water, sewerage, etc for an acre 20 km from the city.
