Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for building a 4 bed house in Melbourne's outer suburbs? I realise that every house would be different but just some rough figures would be great.

Ours would have been $220,000 but we extended the garage

This is just to build the house, we already had the land And we are probably just beyond the furthest reaches of Melbournes outer suburbs

The house is steel framed, 4 bedroomed and study.

Thanks for the reply. I really had no idea of cost but it does seem to be an interesting option. Were you happy with your decision to build in the end?

We are still in the early stages, our frame was delivered today to apparently be put up next week. It will be excellent when it is finished it is getting there that is frustrating

Where abouts in the outer borders we are moving near Greensborough when we first arrive staying with family.
How much is a plot of land average? Its something worth thinking about.

i hope you dont mindme asking but, did you have a Company/Builder do the house for you or did you manage the build yourself and put the work out to subby`s?

We are building through JG King who have been excellent mostly. It has only been a month of building so far though

If we did it again, we reckon it would be worth organising the contractors ourselves as we seem to be about 4 people removed from the people who are actually doing the work. IE We have to talk to our project manager who then has to talk to the contractor they are paying to do the job who then has to get onto the people they have subcontracted to etc etc. They seem to be just picking people out of the yellow pages anyway and our fingers are just as good at doing the walking no doubt

Probably alot more than ours was

We have a 5 acre plot out near Sunbury which is valued at approx $300,000.

Keep us up to date with some photos if you can, its nice to see it at different stages, We hope to do a self build once we get our Visa and get over there. ( whenever that will be)
