How much for a baby in Oz?
Can anyone who has had a baby in Oz, tell me the cost involved? Does medicare cover any of the cost? How easy is it to get obstetric care? etc etc.
Any advice welcomed.
Thanks in advance

Covers all of it in a public hospital. Assuming you're eligible for Medicare to begin with.
Just for a joke, my two kids were worth US$13000 together here in America to have. I'm glad I was insured.

I had ante natal care in Oz up to 6 months pregnant and it was very good. (I came back to UK to have the baby). All the ob/gyn stuff was covered under medicare. There are a few here who had babies in Oz...LynnJ is one.
Good luck...are you just planning or do you already have a big secret

Thanks HP!! It's nice and reassuring to know it's not going to eat up all our savings.
And yes! It's a big secret!!

Congrats, this seems like a good site I have bookmarked,
http://www.wa.bubhub.com.au/
also from July the one off payment is $3000 when child is born.
Our friends have had one baby in Perth and due to give birth again in September, they are very happy with care given under medicare, two scans (12 & 20 weeks), she had an emergency c section in end, didn't cost them a penny, so as they say no worries

A lot of people do have their babies under private care so they can choose their obstretrician (spelling!!) etc. I think the figure is about 60%.
I am also pregnant with my 3rd and so far the only cost involved was a portion of the cost of the nuchal scan.
Good luck
