Default How many carpenters are here ?

Right here i go again.

I have just read an old thread entitled 'How many brickies' and it seemed to get loads of replies.
I thought this might be a good way of getting in touch with carpenters using this forum and finding out what the job situation is like in OZ at the moment for us tradesmen.

So how many carpenters are here ?

I look forward to hearing from you.

OH is a carpenter. We are in the process of applying for a Visa (TRA stage). hope to move to Melbourne. We have a friend in Melbourne who is also a carpenter and says there is plenty of work for carpenters there.

Hubby is a carpenter. Our visa application was received in July so we are just waiting for the next part of the process. Hopefully heading to Brisbane and just booked today to go for a recce in February.

Blimey ..there's gonna be a chippy rush! I'm a carpy and I'M HERE!! Woohoo.
Things are pretty good for chippy's out this way IF ..you have a lead or two by the time you get here! just cold calling on sites just doesn't work (especially over here in Qld because of all the regs and paperwork you need just to step on site!)
There's quite a bit of work in papers but there again it asks for qualifications/blue cards etc so get theses sorted b4 hand (blue card -easy)
basically there are loads of tradies, tons Infact you've just got to go with the flow and get onto the ladder!
money aint to hot abit lower than UK on site work, try and get specialist work if poss, thats where hour rates can rise.
I hope this dont sound two negative it aint all that bad,I thought it would be a bit easier because of all the vibes before we got here and all the TRA stuff (which by the way dont mean jack when your here) just dont expect it to fall on your lap!..there's always the beach to sit and sulk on...so it can't be that bad! Viva la tradies! and dont forget your cool boxes! its too hot for tea

There is more chance of getting work anywhere other than Adelaide, even though "they are crying out" for them.
Go on Careerone and compare how many jobs there are in different states.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Were currently employing carpenters on the coasts and brisbane, no great shortage, plenty of qualified, experienced and licenced around to fill the jobs.

Quick australia wide search on seek.com shows up 207 chippies and cabinet making jobs, plenty of clues in there to location, pay etc.

Will be a bit of a rush on jobs up to Xmas shut down, after that with rising interest rates might be more difficult.

http://www.seek.com.au/jobsearch/ind...archfrom=quick

Edit that 207 jobs includes jobs in New Zealand, sorry did only put in australia, but its like putting in say sunshine coast you get the whole of QLD, they advertise less desirable locations in prime locations.

Great to see so many replies.
I have no idea where to go and i need to decide soon because after the 20th Nov im homeless, so i need to book flights quickly !!
I have been thinking of Melbourne recently so any comments would be appreciated.
The TRA is a bit of a pain so good luck to everyone who is doing theirs right now. Be patient and you will have your results before you know it.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS??

My OH is a time served chippie (no on paper qualifications), we are currently going through TRA (groan), thinking about Adelaide or Melbourne.

My question to all migrant chippies out there already is: What studying/exams did you have to do out there to get your building contractors license? which I believe is what you need to work (though most states are different I think they nearly all want this now?).

Thanks very much
Abi
