Default how long you get

between being granted the visa and having to be in the country. How long do you get to sell the house,sort your finances etc etc

You get one year to enter from the date of your Police checks or medicals. If you get them done early you will obviously have less to to go out there. You don't have to stay permanently you can just visit and go back home for a while.

Tina's right. Plus you need to be in Aus before 5 years is up too, to keep the PR.

yes that's what i thought but our visa has an initial entry date of 30th nov

our meds/police checks were done feb/march this year...

p.s of course once you make a 'validation' trip in that '1 yr time frame' you have another 4 yrs or so to make the big move..

Did you have to submit a health undertaking. If so, that cuts the grace period by 50%.

So does anyone know if you're allowed out of Australia during the two year miniumum stay, e.g. for a holiday?

Of course you can! It is advisable to spend the majority of your time in Australia within that period so that it looks favourable on you when it comes to the end of your 2 year probationary period and you want to get indefinite residency

Yes you can have holidays, but I believe I'm right in that they actually count the 2 years in days - so any holidays out of the country mean you lose those days of residency.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it really a residency requirement of 730 days?
