Question How long it takes to get a first job in Australia

Hi there,

My husband is Australian Citizen, living in England at the moment. We are planning to emigrate to Australia in February because of the bad situacion in UK. In addition, we want to settle down there of course. We have been without job for nearly 6 months and we have a baby to support. My biggest concern is about jobs there. Can someone please advise how is the situations with jobs there? I wouldn't like to get there and live the same bad situation than here. People said is not that bad but I would like to hear other opinions.

Cheers

P.S. We are able to get any job until the proper job comes up

Depends what it is that you both do... We've been here since the end of August. I applied for one job just before we left the UK and I got it. My husband has had two weeks of temping, is currently on his first week of a three week temp job and has applied for 15 jobs of various levels of suitability and has only got one interview (and no job).

Not massively different from the UK I don't think. Remember that the more specialised the job you are looking for the longer it might take to come along.

It took me four weeks. I turned down two other jobs within the same week.

7 years and no job....

Oh wait a minute, I only ever applied for one (an accounting job), and had to refuse it when they offered me the position.... I just couldn't face the thought of working every day...

It all comes down to what you will do. There are current vacancies for chicken neck ringers that can't be filled, for some reason...

30 seconds.

Opening comment at my first interview on first morning of job hunting, I was asked "do you want the job?".

Times have changed a bit since then!

3 days for Mr PP and about 5 weeks for me. As I dont have a car, agencies were only interested in me when I moved to somewhere central.

Times have changed though, lots of pay offs in my company and I know people sending out shit loads of applications.

4 days for me, 9 months for my husband. First application I sent out was hired on the spot. OH sent literally hundreds of applications before he got as far as an interview. We came on his skills btw and that was 3.5 years ago.

Now, he's just been made redundant and has been offered not 1 but 3 jobs. He's decided on one which will be a step up for him which is nice.

Don't assume that. Many people say the same and then find that shelf stacking at Woolies is not that easy to get into, neither are the other jobs where they can use teenagers and pay less.

When the husband decided to look for work, he saw the job in the paper on the Wednesday, rang up on the Thursday, had interview on the Friday and started work on the Monday.

It's one of those 'how long is a piece of string' questions

And if you knock on enough doors, someone sooner or later is going to give you a job. .

4 months and still looking. That said I have a lot of visa restrictions which elimate many advertised positions.

My husband had his contract in place before we arrived...we wouldn't have moved otherwise...

We arrived two years ago. Had decided before we cam out that we wanted a two-month "holiday" first. Then in early January, husband registered with an agency. Got job interview, got the job, started 8 February.

I also had no problem getting a job.

It depends on where you live, what field you work in, and what qualifications you have.

There are a few but most of them got jobs this way before the GFC. Now, with so many qualified, on the ground personnel looking for work, the companies are less likely to bother with someone not yet in the country. Those that do are mainly IT professionals.
