Default How long does it take to tie up loose ends???

Moving out of house 14th January and looking into booking flights! How long do you reckon it will take to tie up loose ends eg last utility bills, getting money transfered etc. Should we book flights for 2 weeks after move out of house or will it not take as long as that?

cheers

i would give yourself at least a month. just in case as certain companies have a habit of messing things up at the last minute.

We flew the day after our house sale closed. Went to the bank with the cheque from the lawyer, changed it to an Australian $ bank draft and went strait to the hotel for an overnight stay for our 5 am flight. About a month before, though, we had taken my sister in law to the bank and had her named as our power of attorney so any last minute stuff could be handled by her. She had full signing authority at our bank so could pay all the last minute stuff off. Six months later she closed our bank accounts and transfered the money left over to our Australian bank.

We completed our house sale midday on the Friday, & flew out the following Tuesday evening.

A few companies (NTL/Virgin - need I say more! Also Thames water) wanted us to call back on the Monday morning for some reason... (prob caught them at knocking off time perhaps??!!)

A couple took our forwarding address here, - the council & Thames water, as they were both confused as to what our final bill would be...??!! Funny really, when & if you ever owe money, they are on the phone quick, then when you want to settle, they haven't a clue!

We transferred our money the morning we flew out.

House completed 2pm on the Friday and by 3pm we were in a hotel at Heathrow awaiting the flight on the Saturday. All utilities had been informed about a month before that everything was to be terminated by 12pm on that day and that as we were leaving the country for some considerable time all final billing (direct debits) needed to be applied for by the following Monday after which time the account would be closed. None of them had a problem and it was all sorted by that Monday. NTL were brilliant with us from the first day we went with them. The companies were all happy to send copies of the final bills to a friend who then passed them on to us.

we flew out on the tues, and the house did not completed til 3 days later.
The only issue we had was with the phone line as we had different provider for broadband & the phoneline, and what we had been told a few weeks earlier to do upon leaving was a load of cr*p, resulting in extra cost & hassle to us.
Bank account in UK left open, to make any necessary payments and for any balancing cheques sent to my parent to bank for us.

sitting here with boxes half packed and vehicles being viewed for sale , house not sold, and loads to do, friends and family want to take us out( lucky celtic called the game off) and getting a bit crammed, bills are easy to sort remember most direct debits are paid in advance so give them notice and close the debits at least a month, book flights early we saved over £1500 for 7 2 mths in advance. Do all you can as early as you can, we tried but we are 11 days from leaving and it looks never ending.
All the best in your move give it at least a month.
