How long does it take to sort out renting?
Am heading out in January, and we have only booked 3 weeks accomodation. Do you think this will be enough time to get a rental property sorted out or not? We're in a position where, when we do rent, we can pay the whole 6mths up front, so hopefully it won't be to hard to get somewhere

Plenty of time - don't rush. Take time to investigate the area and avoid making an expensive mistake.

If you go into the agents themselves you will be spending all day and maybe see a few agents and the lists but they all list them on the site anyway (the major agents anyway). Its faster and a better use of your time and then simply phone to check availability and make an appointment to view (usually same day).
You have to kind of see the property and apply as soon as possible. The competition for rentals is harsh lol and there are not many decent properties about.
The fact that you can pay 6 months up front will make you more attractive than any other applicant but they go like hot cakes so if you find one you really like I would suggest saying you want it there and then.
Have fun happy house hunting!

Take your time with the rental and do not panic, an extra week in temp accommodation can save you lots of expense getting out of an area you end up not liking, or in a house that looks a peach in summer/winter when you see it for 20 mins and can be a right royal pain in the opposite seasons.
Getting out of a lease can be expensive, so try and only sign for six months max. And if you feel you are going to lose the rental house of your dreams and start worrying....remember that it is only a rental. Hopefully in enough time it will be your home you are buying and that will take even more hard work
There are a few other threads on here about what to do when getting a rental, like checking out the deposit and the expected return state. It is worth doing a search. I took note of loads of the advice and it really helped us.
Good luck

Another tip, bring as many references as poss and proof of funds etc. Our checks only took a few days becuase we had a lot of this and therefore 'looked good' candidates on paper. if you have 6 months funds to pay up front, it will only go in your favour!
Nothing to worry about and good luck

Thanks for all the replies. Its made me feel better to know that 3 weeks will probs be enough. Last thing I wanna do is be homeless with the kids :scared:

You are lucky as you know what area you want to move to, the process of taking a rental is very quick...we could have been in ours 'If we wanted in a matter of days' It all depends on your area as to how many rentals there are...where we are there was not many and when there was they would do 'OPEN DAYS' when sh*t loads of people look at the house in one go. It helped us offering 6 months rent up front.... moving fast with viewing the house and getting the paperwork in a.s.a.p. A couple of Oz references is a must.

Who is SIL Shazza? I have been looking for a 2 week rental in Sydney whilst we look for one longer term and can't find anything cheaper than $1500 a week and thats for a 3 bed, same as you?

Oh yeh, silly me, thanks for coming back so quickly. I haven't found anywhere cheaper than about $1500 for a week so $700 is a wicked price!

We didn't offer rent up front on the one we've landed, but did on others - didn't seem to cut it for us.
I wish you luck in your search - at the end of the day, I think much of it is down to luck.
