Question How long before you bought a house?

We have been here 18 months now and we have bought our first house in Australia, move in next week.

Starting to have a few doubts I.E. should we have continued to rent for a while longer with no worries about mortgage or have we done the right thing as you have to get on the ladder sooner rather than later.
Many of our Australian friends still rent and don't see it as an issue, yet I have always thought renting is dead money, your paying someone elses mortgage.

Just wondering what everyone's feelings are?

We'll be buying when the lease runs out on this rental in July next year. We will have been here a year by then.

We are mainly looking to buy because we aren't getting any younger and would like to have something left to leave the kids

And also because you can't put a picture up without permission, we are sick of having to watch the paintwork etc.

We had a deposit down 12 days after arriving on a house and land package, I personally don't believe you can spend any time whatsoever out of the market if you're looking to make a long term gain. This being whether you still have a property in the uk or Oz, in the short term here in Perth is another matter.............thats a real speculator's market!

We bought 7 days after arriving. Quicker than we thought and I would have liked to have earned the extra interest for longer but we saw a house we liked and at the the right price.

We're in Perth and the prices are sky-rocketing so we decided to strike while the iron's hot!

I didn't want to buy so quickly but my wife found this place & fell in love with it. When I saw it I knew it was the right place for us. I must admit, she does have a good eye for property. We were lucky to buy in the lull that occured in the property market here just before Christmas. The sellers were desperate to sell too. I'm glad we did commit because early in the new year the market went mental & we would struggle to buy this place now. Houses in our street have gone up 50% this year & if on the remote chance the market drops 20%, we will still be ahead.

Gosh, I can bearly make a decision about a pair of shoes in that time!
Congratulations on your choices. We want to buy, but we are waiting for our lease to expire early next year.
regards

We are moving into our new home next week after renting for three months.

We had planned to wait until next year but the right house in the right area at the right price came up and we went for it.

IMO you have done the right thing, I think you will feel more settled, and yes renting is dead money.
We bought block of land 2 weeks after arriving, and moved into our new home 12 month later. Wishing you all the best

Bought after 2 months, didn't want to be off the ladder long and it proved to be a wise decision. Interest payments from the bank may sound attractive, but you pay tax with the bank and you dont with your home. Having said all that, we are renting now while we have a house built..... which is a long slog !

We bought after 3 months. We had to wait until my OH started work before we could get a mortgage.

Bought land after 18 months and will hopefully move in almost three years after arriving. We'll have been in three and possibly four rentals during the meantime.

NB: when you are "on the ladder" remember ladders have rungs going down as well as up! Not just a glib truism at the present.
