Default How hot Melbourne could it be?

Hi,

I am new to this forum. Could anyone tell me how hot temperate cities in Australia like Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, or Perth?

How humid could it be?

Thanks
Anthony

How would it feel when the highest temp goes to above 40s? Is it like standing in front of stove? I've never been in a place with this kind of high temperature.

Highest Max Temp (deg C)
44.2 43.4 41.9 36.7 28.7 25.4 22.6 27.8 34.3 39.0 42.0 42.0 44.2 24.2 100

stand in front of a hair dryer, and you get a pretty good idea of how hot it is in my Daimler Chrysler Jeep with the hood down in the middle of summer !

when its hot, all you want to do is hurt people (if you are like me, and dont react well to extreme heat). Fortunately, in melbourne the temp is more like early 30's as an average in summer, 40's are not that common.

Try http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ or the
numerous other weather web
sites for the hard facts! I can tell you from perosnal experience that
Perth has a mediterranean type climate and that Brisbane is humid.

During my last trip to Melbourne in February this year one day reached 38 degrees, though I must stress a lot less iritating than the Humid summers we get in the UK. The heat in Melbourne is a LOT dryer, and thats what counts in my opinion. The 38 degrees was quite bareable unlike 25 in the UK.

I honestly disagree with this. Summer in the UK even 30ish is absolutely totally nothing like Australian heat.

40 in the Southern States is rather like standing in a room sized oven.

Brisbanes humidity is soul sapping. Drains every inch of life from you relentless day and night.

Top temps in most of the tourist brochures read around 28c. This is cr-p. It would be much nearer high 30s with the humidity doubling the effect.

I love european/Mediteranian summers, but not them here.

Today its 30, very little humidity yet compared to summer, but its only early Spring.

Australia is basically a desert and deserts are HOT. I do find People are angry and irrated here in summer.

I accept some may love extreme heat/humidity, but I must say the majority of people I know are dreading it.

Yes marvellous weather last few months, but that was winter, fine to say oh how lovely winter is at 27c but what about summer?

Melbournes 40 days would be rare tho, Brisbanes high 30 days would be quite common now. And no living in it is not the same as a two week holidy to Marabella.

Anybody want to shoot me down, lets discuss this in January!!

40 anywhere is pretty warm.

Adelaide and Perth have Mediterranean climates, what are you talking
about? Or is 'here' just Brisbane.

About as rare as 30 days in the UK.

But when it's hot in Melbourne it's a dry heat, not generally a humid
one. Same goes for Adelaide and Perth. The east coast is more humid.

You'd be much more suited to Melbourne's climate, why you don't just
move there is a mystery. There's always Wellington to consider if you
find Melb too hot as well.

Speaking for Perth ...

It's bone dry in summer, not humid. We do get the odd humid summer day, particularly if there's a cyclone up north, but thankfully those are few and far between. For me, humid heat is unbearable. Never in a million years would I willingly move somewhere with humid heat. Lived in that for 5 years in eastern Canada. Awful. Energy sapping, sticky, yuk. Then winter was another type of hell, but that's another country, another life, another forum.

Personally I find Perth summers nice. I like the heat. In Perth you rarely get several straight days of unbearably hot temps. Some years we have the odd heatwave of a week or two of temps above 35 for several days. However, it's mostly a case of a day or two or three of mid to high 30's, or the odd 40, then a day or two or three of cooler temps (low 30's and cooler). Up and down, up and down. Last summer we didn't get beyond 40 at all.

Air condition your home and you're fine. Most offices and workplaces are air conditioned, as are the buses and trains and cars. And more and more schools are getting air conditioning. So you're rarely in the extreme heat for long, unless that's your line of work. I can't speak for the tradespeople or other workers who have to work outside for a living. In that case, I'd probably have a really good think about moving here if you absolutely can't tolerate the heat.

At least in Perth, the evenings provide relief, particularly if you live close to the ocean (within 5 km). I was just in Vegas two days ago, where it's similar to Perth in summer except there's no relief. Evenings are still hot! Even after the sun's gone down. No ocean breezes. Couldn't live there.

I have family out by Melbourne. Been there during some hot summer days. Less pleasant than Perth because no nice breezes to take the edge off the heat in the late afternoons & it's a bit more humid. Also, they keep saying "it's not hot often enough to warrant aircon". Ha!! It's hot enough for me. Finally convinced my dad to get an aircon unit in his house and he's smacking himself in the head for not doing it years earlier. Just get the damn contraptions installed and get on with life.

Most of the year in Perth is very pleasant. Some extreme days in summer - maybe about 20 of them. Some cool miserable days in winter (but not often enough to drive you nuts or keep you inside too much). First summer might be unpleasant, almost unbearable if you hit a heatwave. You do acclimatise though and start to tolerate the heat better (speaking for Perth's dry heat, not humid heat). My favourite temperatures are the mid 30's now. 21 feels cold.

Good luck,

Helena

Summer in Melbourne last year was unusually mild.
Temps in the high 30's are common in Feb.
