The rental market in Aus is huge compared to the UK but like MrsD says it depends where you are headed.
And yes, there are lovely looking internet houses that are nothing like the real thing.

My friends in Qld found it pretty easy to rent. That said, they weren't too fussy and had a referral from their agent back home. In Melbourne we found agents weren't too keen to rent to us, because we had no reference due to always having owned our own home (bummer), so we ended up starting with something that we thought the agents would deem low risk (rent not too high, few month's rent paid up front) and got in that way. From there we upgraded, having now got the obligatory local references.
We got a decent place, but it was a tad cramped as it only had one living area and one dinning area. At least it had two bathrooms. From there we upgraded to 4 bedrooms plus study, two living areas etc. in a very good neighbourhood.
Money talks though, so if you can pay a few month's rent in advance it helps a lot.

hi we are in Brisbane and had to search around for a decent rental, as has been said some look great in the photo and then in the flesh!!! different story...and there didnt seem to be that many to choose from
we set a budget and then increased it to get the standard we required.
go to all the real estate agents tell them what you want, go looking and usually something will turn up. and it is a great insight into life looking round different suburbs and houses, plus it gets you good at map reading LOL
