How hard is it to get a government job as a PR?

Has anyone tried applying to work in the Australian government?

Do they even respond to applications sent from overseas or do you need to have an Australian address to even hope for a response?

Hi

I do believe that they like you to be a citizen although my OH works with local councils and they employ plenty of overseas staff. Government maybe different though. I think one of the guys on here works for the a government dept and I think it took her (think its a her) a good while to get in. She's the lady who gives all the sever weather warnings out.

Good luck with it all

one of the rights which you have to know to become a citizen is that citizenship gives you 'the right to stand for public office'- I read that as anything paid for by taxpayer funds.

My Mum has a govt job and is not an australian citizen (despite my advice) and can only get to a certain level before you are required to be a citizen or I believe certain govt jobs require it from the start.

Federal - citizen

State - Perm

I got sponsored by the WA Ag Dept (first one to do so:o)

Depends where you are - we went rural, and out here in WA jobs are numerous and people are not.

My wife also did well -- doubling her UK income.

OK we are an hour to the beach but as a whole its:thumbsup:

Interesting, my sister based in Perth tells me jobs are scarce in the rural areas compared with the city. Depends what you do I guess.

Depends which bit of the Government really. Some State Govt jobs require citizenship, though some are happy with just PR. Certainly in Qld you can get temporary contracts with the State Govt on temp visas.
Local Govt varies from place to place as well; Federal usually has a citizenship requirement.

For specialist/skilled positions you might get sponsorship - look at the Queensland Ambulance Service threadd for an idea of the number of paramedics heading this way, - but for more general jobs you need to be here and take your chances against the Aussies.

The applicant need to address the selection criteria well enough. :) This is the hardest part as they dont recruit people by just looking at their Resume/CV.

Federal government departments usually require either citizenship or eligibility for citizenship. When we recruited for Centrelink one of the first questions on the application was citizenship. Anyone who didn't have Australian citizenship was automatically disqualified.

I'd say that for the Commonwealth, not needing Citizenship would be the exception than the norm.
