One other good point about Emirates if you are expecting to do more than one trip to Oz is that if you register for their frequent flyer scheme and book online, with the bonus points you get for your first flight you get nearly enough points from one flight to Oz to update to business for the UK - Dubai sector next time and you can buy extra ones to make up the difference.

I have shed load of the miles, but how in hell i can get the upgrade through their website, I wasn't able to figure it out, one of my dumb moments.

Anyway, my experience with them
Plus sides: food is better in comparison to the European carriers, entertainment system is good
Downsides: They are not member of either star alliance nor the sky team, miles are only transferable between them and Thai air. Stopover in Dubai airport - ugh. Arrival to Sydney at 6am - double ugh

Agree about Dubai airport. Cheap for electrical goods but short on creature comforts. One tip, if you want somewhere to sit down head to the right (with your back to the planes) and keep going, there's much more room that end.

6am arrival in Sydney - great. Being in daylight helps with jetlag and you are much more likely to keep going until getting on for nightime which helps your body clock.

emirates are okay, depends on the crew I have found
dubai airport is rubbish tho' but I did find the Mahabra lounge is well worth it if you have 2 or more hours layover, its around 25AUD for using it, has plenty of chairs, a buffet, drinks, computer access, toilets and they wil transport you to the gate just before boarding in a golf cart thingo, well worth it!!! you dont have to book you can just turn up and pay

If you are a member of Virgin Blue's Velocity programme you can also have Emirates miles credited there.
