If we opened a Commonwealth account in the UK for the transition then closed it on arrival in Oz is there any penalties??

Thanks for that. I don't really want to bank with them as their charges are so huge but it does seem an easy option to be able to easily put money in GBP change to AUS $ when we decide then they transfer the money to Oz.
Out of interest who do you bank with now? I have been looking at westpac's accounts

I have accounts with ANZ and St George
St George is just a little bank but I always find the people in the branches very friendly. ANZ are very helpful too.
We use our St George multiaccess card (VISA debit) in shops so that we don't pay a fee to use it. If we used the same card for EFTPOS we would have to pay a fee after 12 transactions.
This whole topic is very confusing LOL Let me know if you need any more help or if you would like me to explain it more clearly

Hi
I am struggling a little with the EFTPOS I thought that was the same as paying by Visa Delta but obviously not. I guess we have to re educate ourselves with the whole aussie banking system. We are so used to writing cheques and drawing money out of ATM's without charge in the UK.

The whole system confuses me too
With ANZ I just have an EFTPOS card which means I can use it to pay it shops by swiping it and then entering my pin no.
It is possible to do the same with the St George multi access card but with this account I only have 12 free transactions a month and so each EFTPOS trasaction would use one up.
However if I use the card as credit (meaning you have to sign as in UK) then these transactions are always free for some reason.
I just have a savings account (ANZ).. think St George is savings and credit.

We enjoyed visiting the crown!!!! The reason for the Peninsula is my hubby is going to play cricket for Flinders and all our mates (through the cricket) live down that way. I will commute into the city for work but I fancy living by the ocean. Not sure which side we have friends in Rosebud on the bay side and friends near Balnarring on the ocean side.
But we have a holiday home they are letting us use in Rosebud until we decide where we want to be.
Wish we were there now. Got a viewing on the house in 10 mins so fingers crossed may get a sale
