How do you secure joiner/foreman job before actually leaving the UK? Please help...
 

OH is about to lost another foreman job (4th in last 3 yrs) as the company has gone bust. We are really struggling now and have decided that we are not going to be able to save and maybe won't be able to sell the house but we will just have to head out to Melbourne now and stop putting it off "until things get better" over here.

Anyway, has anyone managed to secure construction work before leaving the UK? He has sent his CV to companies based in and around Melbourne to see if they are looking for joiners but there has bascially been no response apart from one company saying they have nothing at the moment but when we get there, he could go round their sites to see if the need joiners.

Thanks so much for anyone's advice on this - I don't know if people who have been offered jobs before leaving the UK or if you have all just headed off with some savings and just held out for work when you arrived in the country.

You can't really secure a job (unless you are coming here on a work sponsored visa) before you get here.... They want to see you at interview, see qualifications and see you in the country!

Are you working in Scotland? Maybee he can head to Aus and try to get work and then you head over after that if he's successful. if he can't get work he can head back to the UK. Not the best, but at least you would still have some safety net?
I'm not in Aus, but have done this kind of thing in the past.

Agree 100%. Building industry in OZ is not what it was 2 years ago, competiton for jobs is red hot and local experience wins. Melb is not the worst place but it lost a lot of major projects and people like my BIL whos been in bus for 30 years still reckon its quiet and a lot of competetion for jobs. ( Jobs as in major construction and on going work, the work people want, not as in little bits of one off work which ususally cost more time effort and paperwork than they pay ) .

Your savings would have to cover him getting here and back, looking for work - which could take 6 months, accommodation, food etc... and your costs staying at home in the UK.

Think carefully what you do...


If you both come, and he can't find work, can you work to support you both?
Do you have children?

Most people come here and attempt to get work whilst living off savings. It's a risk but it's possible and works out fine for many. For some, it doesn't work out.

Thanks for your replies. I think at the moment it is a case of we are prob going to lose the house here unless we can sell it whether we head to Australia or not so we have decided if we are going to have to sell up and move back in with the parents for now then we might as well try to save up a bit and then head out to Victoria.

OH would not not like to go out there and leave us behind. Even if we got there and he couldn't get work in construction straight away either one of us would work to keep us going until he could get something in construction.

I guess we will have to be a bit more realistic again or just tighten our belts and get this house sold.

You can't always sell for what you want, so speak to your estate agent and look at reducing the price of your house - or ask what you can do to it to help it sell. Your agent should have ideas for you.
Better to sell at a loss and pay that back whilst you're living with parents.

Also, speak to a debt advisory people and ask if there's anything you can do about your mortgage.
There are legal things you can put in place to stop your house being taken from you by your lender...
