Question How do you register for Medicare?

We are going to Australia soon and I was wondering what the process is to register for Medicare.

Just go into a Medicare office. They're all over the place.
If you're a valid visa holder, they'll have you on their computer.
Just show them your visa & some ID.
Takes about 2 min's..

You need to fill up a short form (you can get one there on the spot) and provide a residential address. It's advisable that the postal address that you provide is permanent enough to last out a month, as you will receive your plastic medicare card in the post in about 20-28 days later.

The Medicare offices' computers are linked to DIMIA's, but will only register your details about 5 to 10 calendar days after your arrival on a permanent visa.

Hi Peter.....

We went into the Medicare office the day after we landed in Perth, & we were on their system. Maybe we looked ill after the flight, & they pushed it through..

Hi Scossie

A friend of mine and family were told to come back in a few days' time, after the Medicare people couldn't find them on their system.

In Sydney 4 or 5 working days is a good bet.

Thanks for the informative replies. Its reassuring to have advice from people who have been and done those things you yourself are unsure about.

Thanks again.

In Vic you need to wait 5-7 working days.Medicare offices are in every shopping mall. There is no form required, just present your passports and a residential address.A PO Box is ok.
