Default How different did you feel after buying your first home in Oz?

We've been here almost 2 years now and are still in rented accommodation (mainly because we dont know where we'll settle) but we're looking at buying in the next 12 months. I was just wondering how different you felt after making that big step. Did it feel great to have a 'home' again and did you settle more? I'm so over living in rented now and just want to get back to being able to improve my own home etc

Cheers all

And not being able to have whatever pets you want (we'd love a little dog )

We are trying to buy our first house in Oz now(waiting for mortgage ok!) and I hope we will feel more settled. We would also like a puppy. Our next door neighbours have a rented house and have 3 cats and 1 rabbit so I think some owners are more open to pets though for some reason ok cats and not dogs. Not allowing a goldfish is daft!Sue.

Bleeding relieved, we had been living with the Mother In Law for over a year ... 2 adults who barely knew each other + newborn + MIL = stress for all concerned.

Can't imagine us moving from our place now. Definitely feel more settled and it's nice to spend some time and money improving the place with a degree of certainty.

We bought in desperation to get away from the MIL. It has never felt like a home to us really, more like a holiday let. Maybe because we were so used to a homely fireplace, central heating etc...
But we decorated it, put pictures up and it did feel more like our home eventually...and i'm glad we didn't rent.

It made a huge difference having our own place. It made an even bigger difference to my kids, particularly my youngest strangely enough. They always called the house 'the rental' and never liked spending time in their rooms. They have posters up now and they love their rooms now.

God, we were the same! Lived with Mother in Law for about 10 months with two nippers, Aussie OH out of work for about 8 of those months. It was one of the most stressful times of my life (what with her being a kindy teacher/former nurse ... you can imagine!).

It was such a relief to get our own place. Unfortunately our marriage only survived a few months after we moved in

Seems like living with the MIL when emigrating is not the answer...mine drove us all to suicide, i'm not kidding! For me, she ruined it for us from the start.

Aye, it wasn't great but we WERE thankful for her help, it's just too much with 3 grown people trying to make decisions.

(Marriage) Better to be seperated than miserable together.

She was OK but the combination didn't work, hell, sometimes just me and the OH don't work but that's what this journey of discovery is all about innit?

We only ended up renting for 5 months and never really fully unpacked - it was fantastic to move into our own home, get to know the neighbours and to know we're not moving again for a few years. The kids have settled down much more now we are in our own home and we have been able to get a puppy and some guinea pigs and chickens.
