Default How can anyone afford a house in Melbourne?

Seems to live in a good area in Melbourne you're looking at spending at least $700,000 up. How are people managing to buy these houses? Even the more "affordable" areas are still very expensive in my opinion. Am really interested to know how people are financing their purchases.

I'm not going to Melbourne but prices were higher than that quoted last time I was there a year or two ago.

There should be plenty of Melbourne residents who will answer when they are online.

Like any city they live further out and commute.

Then you can easily find housing more around the $400,000 although a lot of it is in need or renovation/repair. Like new? try the cheaper housing estates on the western side of melb.

Not true. If you avoid the inner suburbs, and the new builds, (polarisation) then you can still find a 4x2 for that price in a perfectly good established area.

Edit: Melbourne prices stabilised in a manner of speaking 2 years ago not seeing the increases like say in Perth. The best areas are still creeping up - I say creeping because it might not be 25pc etc(!) ours is.

The only way to move to a cheap, but good area is to go established area say 30k out, avoid new builds - which CAN be very expensive as well, or frankly are pretty soul destroying. Because so many people like new builds, you can haggle more on that home needing reno or just not so desirable.

We paid 1/3M on a house which just needed a lick of paint, new gutters, an ensuite retiling, and a pergola spruced up in a few key areas.
