In WA we needed to borrow 168K$(approx 68 K pounds) I wasnt happy at all,BUT, I bought the Anita Bell book called "Your mortgage and how to pay it off in 5 years" because I wanted to challenge it-we put it into practice, still managed 2 UK hols , didnt deprive ourselves,(we have both working class jobs) and hey presto-It was gone & paid off in 4 years & 2 months!
It can be done-just try & resist the urge to buy expensive vehicles, and KNOW thy weaknesses!

Congrats on shifting the mortgage in record time, and thanks for the book recommendation.

I'm also on a financial self-help bint having been recommended to read 'The Barefoot Investor'. Excellent book explained in clear concise english for anybody looking to escape the credit crunch.

we are moving soon though and had to borrow another $146K

still, not too bad I guess and hopefully manageable (as long as they dont keep putting the rates up!!)

Haven't had a mortgage on our house for 16 years .

Paid the mortgage we had on our previous house off completely (took six years), and paid cash for the next house. It's not impossible to do, if you set your mind to it - just put all spare cash into the mortgage.

Just paid the mortgage off on an investment property, too (took seven years).

In both cases they were 25-year mortgages.

Borrowed NZ$90,000 in April 2004.

Now is NZ$4,200 and falling rapidly. Should be paid off by next payday.

We are now paying $400 p.m. extra on our mortgage since taking it out in December '06. I'm hoping to God that at the very least the interest rates don't go up anymore.

Same here. We were paying $1,900 a month 2 years ago. Now we are paying $2,300.
My house is crap too, wouldn't mind if it was a mansion

Well, you weren't as mad as us. Just as we thought we getting on top of things again (after I changed from being a permy to a contractor) the interest rate rises have put us firmly back at square 1 again.
