How accurate/up to date is 'street view' on Google maps?
Hi, I have been looking on Google maps as part of my research for where i'm going to move to, but when i use the street view it appears that life doesn't exist!
Im looking at various streets in Cairns (Queensland) -which I know is small anyway, but surely there must be more life than what is shown. The roads seem empty and the people are non-existent. Its like a ghost town - or is that what Cairns is really like?
Hmm. please reassure me that im not moving to a town of 10 people with one car between them.
Does anyone know how current/out of date the 'street view' is (also it doesnt show darkness only daylight - which doesnt change)? Also, have images/objects been removed to make the screen clearer - would explain the lack of cars!?
Thanks.

My query isnt limited to Cairns, general responses for other areas/states would be useful too, for i'll need to plan a holiday at some stage!!

Street views would have been taken in the last 18 months or so I would guess. Most of the ones I have seen dont have evidence of life apart from the occasional car - probably a privacy issue. I dont know when they drove past our place but it looks quite early morning-ish and no one is about.

Similar here, northern outskirts of Sydney was taken about 18 months ago.

Our street view was taken last February - I know that because my neighbours wall is down on it after some idiot crashed into it
No, it wasn't me.....but I know who it was
Anyhow a new wall went up within a week, so it was definitely taken between 2nd and 10th Feb as for the time, it must have been early morning before 8am cos my car is in the garden and after that time it would have been in the garage.

Google performed the StreetView imaging anything up to 20 months ago... They are still going.
The problem with StreetView is that it will ago much worse than the satellite imagery. While terrain, roads and building mass may not change very often, individual buildings will be torn down, new complex block added, etc.

Cairns was Nov 07 and lots was taken early in the morning before many people were about.

I'm not sure I'd base my views on Cairns based on how busy the streets look when single photos were taken, which presumably are intentionally taken a time when there is little traffic and people, ie so you view the street rather than a bunch of cars.

Not up to date where we live, although gives a good idea of the area but lots of other housing and shops have been built since they were along our way.

Our area is so old our house is still just a slab. We've lived in it for 18 months now. A little further down they're about a year old. On the 3D view my car is sitting in Northerbird's driveway
