Household items in Sydney

Hi Guys.
We are moving to Sydney in 22 days, 22 hours and 5 mins, (you can tell i am getting excited lol)

Anyway guys, the question is this - we arent taking a lot with us, just cloths and shipping personal items, so we need to buy everything for the appartment, such as sofa, tv, dinning room stuff and kitchen appliances. So could anyone recomend places in Sydney.
Many thanks for all you help

There are quite a lot of Homeware-type malls around with multiple furniture and electrical shops all under the same roof. You can often play one shop against another price-wise without having to drive somewhere else.

There's the SupaCenta at Moore Park (with Dick Smith, Harvey Norman and a Freedom Furniture) and another one at Caringbah. Plus a very good mall-ey place at Alexandria (with a Good Guys, Bing Lee and Oz Design). Crows Nest and Parramatta Road near Leichhardt and also at Auburn also have clusters of furniture/electrical stores close together. Northside would have other similar areas.

Plus, of course, a big Ikea at Rhodes for super-cheap household stuff.

Fantasticfurnishings.com have a deal on to fit your whole house for $2000!!!!
Yes its basic but its excellent for a start. They also do seperate bedroom, Living Room and Dining Room packages. Its worth a look for intitial start up packages. I can also recommend secondsworld as per another poster, great for electricals.

We were lucky enough to get in contact with an expat couple returning to the UK via this site and as a result got an apartment's worth of very new Ikea furniture and appliances for next to nothing!! Result!!!!

The rest of the stuff we needed we got from Ikea and Bing Lee (electricals) which is next door. If you need to hire a van then go to Budget - they're excellent. 50 quid for a Toyota LWB for a day!! And the petrol is dirt cheap over here despite the Aussie complaints!! ;-)

We are on week 10 of being here in Sydney and loving it. If you need any help then drop me a PM. A lot of what you'll go through in setting up home here can be very frustrating, but you get through it and its well worth it.

Forget how things work in the UK and approach with an open mind.....and wallet!!

or try http://www.fantasticfurniture.com.au/ cheaper than Ikea, but maybe not as "designer", but good value for starting out.

For appliances and whitegoods you can't beat The Good Guys- and expect to negotiate, as they encourage you to do so.

For furniture, check out IKEA, The Trading Post and Ebay for second hand goods (both online) and your specialty stores like Oz Design and Freedom. Good middle of the range stuff that's reasonably priced as well.

Happy travelling :)
