Default House Insulation

Our house in Australia has no insulation. We want to put some in but are researching the different kinds, costs and if we can DIY from Bunnings-any ideas ??

Our house has no insulation too. The house is red hot in summer, bloody freezing in winter. No winning.

We are too looking to insulate it and are going to do it ourselves. Not a job i am looking forward to.

There are also specialist insulation companies that can do it for you and have various different options.

We had the same trouble - we paid $1800 last year for full roof insulation highest bat?? whater ever that means - and it certainly worked a treat. Cooled it down by 4 degrees inside and in winter it meant we didn't use the blow heaters in the bed rooms

That's not a bad price. We have the standard stuff they put in when they build nowadays, it looks like little bits of paper and they pump it in. Must admit so far so good, we can definitely feel the difference from our rental and bearing in mind the rental we moved from was only just a year old itself but obviously had crap insulation as it was boiling hot in summer and freezing in winter.

We will see how we go over winter and if need be think about upgrading it, nice to get an idea of costs though, ta!

If you get the pumped in chewed up newspaper stuff (well advertisd on TV) when you sell the house the pest inspector will leave a big question mark over the roof as to whether there are termites or not.

If you put batts in yourself dont use a metal rake to push the batts around as the rake and electrical cables dont mix all that well as some have found out.

I was told the stuff they blow in is not fire retardant for very long-2 years max I think.

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I live in Cairns Queensland; don't own a heater and don't need one. I used to live in WA and in southern Australia and definitely don't miss the cold winters. I have been in the tropics now for 4 years and love it. Fantastic weather; live in shorts and t-shirt most of the time. Ceiling fans for cooling and spend lots of time outdoors. Life's great!

Good luck with the house insulation

Cairns is wonderful, but so is WA! Lots of nice places over there. Costs have gone up here too but probably not as much as Perth. We have a Hosted Accommodation business here in Cairns so often help people who relocate here. We have a family relocating here from the UK next month and will be looking after them for a month while they settle in and decide where to to rent.

Cheers, Tim.

We fitted a wood burning stove yesterday and had it working last night - It was fab - so excited about winter now. Got a fan in the back so it should easily heat the whole house

Whatever you do MAKE SURE that you leave plenty of room around the light fittings, epspecially downlighters. These things can reach temperatures of 250degrees

You can get a special paper type stuff that you make into a barrier and place it around the fitting. If you get pumped insulation, the guys are supposed to do it...watch them, as from what I've seen they are a bit slap dash.
