Default House buying protocol in NZ

Does anyone know if it's the same when buying a house in nz with regards to the asking price here ie:the asking price is an ideal, but you can offer less? Or like scotland where you have to give a tender above the asking price? any help would be gratefully recieved as we are about to go over and buy a place and rent it out 'til we go.

I've bought 2 houses in NZ both through estate agents. When you find the house you like and are not prepared to pay the full asking price you make a written offer to the estate agent. He then tootles off to the seller and talks to him, comes back with a counter offer , rejection or acceptance. This can go on for an hour or so with agent going backwards and forwards.

Would make it simpler if you negioted directly with seller but agent didn't want me to do this.

Sold one house privately and dealt directly with seller no problem and much preferred metod for me.

Could be numerous ways of doing it just my experience.

Thanks, that's pretty much the same advice Paula gave, at least I know where to start now!

we made an offer direct to the seller, he came back with a different price which we then agreed to - still below the asking price so we were happy with that. Houses seem to be generally fairly slow selling in NZ so its always worth trying an offer - he can only say no!

Good luck
Doug
