Default Hospital Cover

I understand that for the first 4 years we are not able to claim off the government. But happens in the following situations, who has to pay for:

1) Abulance?
2) Any hospital treatment?
3) Any emergency like an epileptic fit?

Thanks in advance!

Which State are you moving to? (may seem a daft question but ambulance services vary from State to State)
What visa are you on?
What nationality are you?

Ok well as a permanent resident I believe u would be entitled to apply for a medicare card which will grant u all the benefits of an australian citizen. Ur own citizenship becomes immaterial once u have been granted permanent residency.

As regards Ambulance, I know in Vic Ambulance Costs are absorbed by the patient and are very expensive, so the majority of Victorians hold an Ambulance Card which are relatively inexpensive ($80 per year I think).

Don't take this as Gospel but I think this is the case.

Best of Luck

Your information is incorrect. You are not able to claim certain benefits for [B]2[B] years, not 4. However, in answer to your questions,

1) For the most part you pay. You can get cover through private medical for a very low fee.
2) Medicare covers the cost of any hospital treatment in a public hospital. If you choose to use a private hospital you will either pay yourself (not cheap) or have to have private cover. Again, not too expensive for basic hospital cover.
3) Medicare covers emergency care at any public hospital.

As a PR you are entitled to the same benefits as a citizen with the exception of the right to vote, hold certain jobs (commonwealth gov't require citizenship for most positions), hold an Australian passport or claim benefits like unemployment.
