Is there a street with houses with bashed up utes and crates of empty VB in the front yard? Even worse is there anywhere where people jog in shorts like Kel from K&K?

Lived in Hornsby for 3 years (98-01). Its a good spot to live. i never saw any bad spots. The pub on the north side of the rail line was a bit rough and ready but OK
Check out the area once you're there as the surrounding suburbs are pretty good also.

I want to be reasonably close to the station so I will look out for the pub. What is the mullet count like up there?

Many who lived there when I did were either city suits or tradies. The tradies were looked down on of course but also envied because they were pretty well off... cashed up Bogans.
If you want to be near the line then consider also Asquith, Mnt Colah, Mnt Kuringai and possibly all the way to Cowan. The first three would add only about 5-10 minutes to your journey into the city which if I recall was about 40-45 minutes anyway.
