Well, well, well.
A little levity goes a long way.

I have driven in lot of countries and not just for few days but at
length.
To me Cairo and most places in India really take the cake. You cannot
even discuss these as there is no such thing as traffic sense.

In the developed world that I have driven, the worst in my opinion is
Boston, US. A search for Boston Drivers or Boston Driving on Google
will yeild enough articles to keep you busy for few days. AND, there
is an entire book on how to drive in Boston (it really describes some
clever manuevers that you would never think would be possible until
you drive in Boston!)

Also, in my opinion, Boston roads are the worst for signage. Every
Bostonian has gotten lost even with the detailed maps as the streets
just defy how they can be depicted in the maps.

Here is an excerpt of what you can find on the net...enjoy !!!

How To Drive In Boston
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The geographical center of Boston is in Roxbury.
Due north of the center we find the South End.
This is not to be confused with South Boston
which lies directly east from the South End.
North of the South End is East Boston and
southwest of East Boston is the North End."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic rules for driving in Boston

Boston is often acclaimed as the most exciting city in America in
which to drive. Who would argue? Herewith, for newcomers and
visitors,
are a few basic rules of the road for driving in these parts:

To obtain a general idea of how to drive in Boston, go to a
Celtics game and carefully watch the fast break. Then get behind the
wheel of your car and practice it.

Never take a green light at face value. Always look right and
left before proceeding.

When in doubt, accelerate.

Very generally speaking, the intransigence of the Boston driver
is directly proportional to the expense of his American-made car, and
inversely proportional to the expense of his foreign-made car. But in
applying this formula, bear in mind that they are all more or less
intransigent.

In the long run, parking your car in a lot is always cheaper than
parking it at a meter.

Drivers whose cars sport "I Brake For Animals" bumper stickers
may brake for animals, but they may not brake for you. Watch it.

Never drive behind a person whose head doesn't reach the top of
the steering wheel.

Teenage drivers believe they are immortal. Don't yield to the
temptation to teach them otherwise.

Taxicabs should always have the right of way, unless you are bent
on suicide.

Never, ever, stop for a pedestrian unless he flings himself under
the wheels of your car.

The first parking space you see will be the last parking space
you see. Grab it.

Learn to swerve abruptly. Boston is the home of slalom driving,
thanks to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, which puts potholes in key
locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on their toes.

Steer clear of people with antinuclear bumper stickers pasted on
their cars. They are interested in preserving mankind, which is
admirable. But they are not necessarily interested in preserving you,
or themselves, for that matter. They have more important things to
think about.

Never get in the way of a car that needs extensive body work.

Double-park in the North End of Boston, unless triple-parking is
available.

Always look both ways when running a red light.

While it is possible to fit a 15-foot car into a 15-foot parking
space, it is seldom possible to fit a 16-foot car into a 15-foot
parking space. Sad but true.

There is no such thing as a short cut during rush-hour traffic in
Boston.

It is traditional in Boston to honk your horn at cars that don't
move the instant the light changes.

Never put your faith in signs that purport to provide directions.
They are put there to confuse people who don't know their way around
the city.

Use extreme caution when pulling into breakdown lanes. Breakdown
lanes are not for breaking down, but for speeding, especially during
rush hour.

Never use directional signals, since they only confound and
distract other Boston drivers, who are not used to them.

Similarly, never attempt to give hand signals, Boston drivers,
unused to such courtesies, will think you are waving them on to pass
you.

The yellow light is not, as commonly supposed outside the Boston
area, a signal to slow down. It is a warning to speed up and get
through the intersection before the light turns red.

Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right.

In making a left turn from the right lane, employ the element of
surprise. That is, do it as suddenly as possible, so as to stun other
drivers.

Speed limits are arbitrary figures posted only to make you feel
guilty.

Whenever possible, stop in the middle of a crosswalk to insure
inconveniencing as many pedestrians as possible.

Remember that the goal of every Boston driver is to get there
first by whatever means necessary.

Above all, keep moving.

And good luck. You'll need it.

sorry, but got to say that Australians are the SECOND worst drivers in the world - only to the French. lived in europe, yugoslavia, even OMAN (insh alah...but even they have some intelligence behind a wheel), and have found australian drivers to be terrible (and I spent the preceding 4 years living/driving in London before moving down here). !

Ever been in a cab in Shanghai or worse Beijing? My hands are sweating just remembering it.
I read once that the Portugeuse (is that how you spell it) are officially the worst drivers in Europe. So there.

Which has nothing to do with the quality of the road, so umm, "get real"
yourself.

    > You're talking about a state which had to introduce a law (2 years ago

It didn't work very well. I'm not talking about the state. You are,
because you know you've stuffed up with the whole motorway thing and it's
all you've got.

    > And your quote about Britain being crammed in... lol, get real, I'm from
    > Wales not London. And Brisbane is bad mate.

You must be a bit thick, because Wales is on the same little island The
island has far more people crammed into it than Australia does along its
seaside. And yes, we've seen your Wales argument before, but that was kind
of crap wasn't it... comparing a town and outlying areas to a city 5-8 times
its size in Australia.

    > Orange lights are used on all roads in Britain, unlike these poxy white
    > light you have here... not worth anything... lack of funding.

Your maths is obviously as dodgey as your logic. Instead of foaming at the
mouth, try reading this again:

If British and American roads weren't better, then there'd be something
terribly wrong. For all those people you have crammed into your little
island, you would certainly expect their tax dollars to pay for the small
distances of road to be of good quality... America also has far more people
to cover the cost of roads per kilometre.

Do you understand population densities?

    > uhh .. you don't find the road to the sunshine coast curvy.. lol..

You obviously don't drive up there very much. In most areas it's wide and
completely straight. Maybe you'd thought no one on here had ever driven up
that way and you could getaway with a few fibs?

Mate, There is a huge difference in driving in parts of England to driving in Wales, where there are only 2.9 million people in the whole of Wales.
I drive in more traffic jams here in Brisbane than I ever have in Wales. Tough if you don't like it! I suppose you may be one of the drivers which I curse here everyday... going too slow and stuck out in the fast lane, and break, Break, break... I've been in Australia for 5 years - 4 of them in Brisbane, and I drive to the sunshine coast every weekend.

I suspect you may need glasses to drive if you can't see the curves(this is in response to your attack on me! calling me thick... I'm sinking to your level.. sorry!, but perhaps this is all that you understand)

I could have swore I said Britain and was commenting on the island as a
whole...

    > I drive in more traffic jams here in Brisbane than I ever have in Wales.

That's because you lived in a town 1/10th the size of Brisbane. Have you
not been told this enough times yet? Why don't you move to Toowoomba if you
want to compare apples with apples and not apples with oranges? The latter
only makes you seem more sillier than your previous post, as it's obviously
not hitting home each time that you're told.

    > Tough if you don't like it!

I'm not the one who should be worried about your inability to form a
half-reasonable comparison. You should be, though. If I were to follow
your logic, I could just as stupidly compare Warwick Shire with Cardiff.
Would it make any sense? Nope... but it'd make as much sense as your
comparison.

    > I suppose you may be one of the drivers
    > which I curse here everyday... going too slow and stuck out in the fast
    > lane, and break, Break, break...

I doubt it, chump. If I'm in the fast lane, I'm overtaking someone. You
tourists, are afterall, the ones who make the headlines for being pathetic
drivers... not that I disagree with QLD drivers being totally crap as well.

Oh, and by the way, it's "brake", not "break". If you'd written it once I'd
have forgiven it for a type, but three times after the other? I guess I
wasn't wrong about the "thick" part.

    > I've been in Australia for 5 years -
    > 4 of them in Brisbane, and I drive to the sunshine coast every weekend.

Really? Where on the Sunshine Coast do your drive to? I really question
your ability to handle yourself at speed if you're complaining about curves
between Brisbane and Noosa. North of Noosa, as I said, doesn't qualify as a
motorway (but then, I never knew it was classed as such... always thought
that it was a highway); it's twisty and one lane each way in most parts.

    > I suspect you may need glasses to drive if you can't see the curves(this
    > is in response to your attack on me! calling me thick... I'm sinking to
    > your level.. sorry!, but perhaps this is all that you understand)

Actually I wear glasses for driving, so my eyesight is 100%. How about
yours? You can have a free check with your medicare card if you want.

You still haven't replied to this to acknowledge the difference in
population density and the ability of a country to spend on its road
network:

If British and American roads weren't better, then there'd be something
terribly wrong. For all those people you have crammed into your little
island, you would certainly expect their tax dollars to pay for the small
distances of road to be of good quality... America also has far more people
to cover the cost of roads per kilometre.

Don't worry. From what I've read of Ceri's posts he has a
rose tinted memory of Wales that's not exactly equating to
reality. While Wales may have a small population, a lot of
it is empty or sparsely populated, but that's true of lots
of countries. What you have to look at are places where people
actually live. Traffic in populated areas of Wales is bad.
You can queue for 8 miles to get into Cardiff in the
rush hour, while towns such as Pontypridd are traffic
nightmares at the best of times. Speed limits on many roads
are coming down, traffic lights are sprouting up on more
and more roundabouts, and new roundabout are appearing to
service yet more industrial estates and new housing estates
on green fields, despite there being an oversupply of empty
factories and rundown brownfield sites all over the place.

    >> I drive in more traffic jams here in Brisbane than I ever have in
    >> Wales.

That may well be true. I've no idea about Brisbane traffic, but
to imply Wales isn't a traffic blackspot is very misleading.
It's almost impossible to find a day when there are no roadworks
between Cardiff and Swansea on the M4 motorway, and then on top
of the roadworks, the councils pick their moments to close roads
to pick up rubbish on the central reservation and hard shoulders.
The Ely link road from the M4 into Cardiff Bay seems to be restricted
to one lane each way on a weekly basis for litter collection and/or
weed cutting.

Ceri gives up on threads where evidence is offered to contradict
his opinions. That's troll like behaviour.

My, My so I was right then about the glasses. And don't be so picky ... so I spelt break, for "gawds" sake I type fast and the way I speak... such pettiness, If I had proofed my comments , I would have saw that... such narrow mindedness.

salw sais ... go figure, or can't you understand a real British dialect? ... see I'm being as petty as you.. I'll bite when pushed!

you question my ability to handle curves... now this I'm laughing at... "You're talking to someone who represented the Singapore International Kart club.. lol... you are cracking me up now boyo... want me to give the dates, and countries and medals I've raced in .. I've been in motor sport for years... "International A" I hold an international karting licence... oh why go on.. lol. Want me to scan my licence and put it up? Because I know you don't believe me. Want me to tell you who was in the Singapore International kart club... Kenny Yip, .. get real , I have more controll over a vechicle than you ever will due to motor racing

And as for "Rob"... you're not even worth a reply, having never lived in Brisbane, and Swansea... geeze where do you get off mate picking on people... you need other peoples back up do you?

Did it ever occur to you that I do not answer some posts , "I leave it there" because I can see it's going nowhere, and into an argument?.
I dislike your attitude and if you want "tit for tat" mate... go and fight with someone else... , because I come on this board for a bit of "time out" and not debate with a few idiotic morons who try to pick fights with me...

Cheers

P.s "Swansea the size of Toowoomba"... lol... I'll say it one more time... SWANSEA IS A COUNTY! It covers swansea city, Gower, Neath, Port Talbot, sigh...Swansea county covers a bigger area than Brisbane (although some people on this board.. has old info, and thinks Swansea is still W.Glamorgan ... geeze ..and try to say Swansea is not a county... that makes me laugh, shows how little they really know... so funny

... sad , really sad...

Can I play too?

I've driven in Australia (all major cities but Melbourne), Europe (Germany,
Holland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Yugoslavia, Hungary
and Greece), and in 14 of the 50 states in the US.

Without a shadow of doubt in my mind, for sheer SUV-crazed "I have a bigger
penis" (with men) or "applying make-up is more important than watching what
bloody lane I'm in, so up yours" (with women) madness, incompetence and
agressiveness, I have never encountered worse drivers than in Denver,
Colorado. Where I still have the misfortune to live, alas.

The so-called "natives" like to blame it on the Californians, who certainly
are bad, but just clueless, not road-raged. Of course, I then love to point
out that the majority of people here are actually from the Midwest - or
Texas.

The bone-headed, deadly "if I didn't think for both of us, we'd both be
dead" maneuvers I encounter every commute defy description. And with some
of the moronic suburban rednecks, you just know that they think (and I use
that term loosely) "if my truck don't getcha, my 45 automatic will".

I'll take Paris or Italy anytime - heck, I enjoyed driving there, once I
got into the swing of things. Just don't do it in a car where you'd hate to
get scrapes and dings.

At any rate, unless it's changed dramatically since 1996 (last time I was
in Australia), I found Aussie drivers to be among the most civilized of the
list above. People actually stay in the... uhm, left lane. They know what a
turn signal is - and use it (rumor has it, car dealerships in Denver will
start advertising turn signals as optional equipment). I've never been cut
off - which here is the adopted method of exiting a freeway - from the
leftmost lane and across 3 other lanes of traffic.

Incidentally, I remember from about 15 years ago, when I still lived in
Germany, a statistic by the German automotive club, that ranked European
drivers from worst to best, and Belgium, Holland and Germany ranked at the
top. Among the best were actually and surprisingly the Italians. IIRC, the
ranking was based on accident rates per kilometers driven, or some such.
Yes, a lot changes in 15 years, but drivers I wouldn't count among those
things.

Cheers
Mike

Uh-huh... so because you type so fast, you spelt the same word three times,
back-to-back, incorrectly? haha Right...

Wow, I'm so impressed. Why don't you scan me an autograph instead? lol
Yet you whinge about a near dead-straight road... what happened? Did you
have an accident and catch some shrapnel in both eyes?

No, it occurred to me that you're full of shit half of the time and whenever
you have to think for more than a few moments, you run scared and "leave it
there". You haven't been able to address any of the pop. density argument
because you know you're running on empty, and instead of bowing out
gracefully, you've continued to make a blind arse of yourself. Well go for
gold, moron.

You don't get to use the word idiot until you've redeemed yourself.

Liar. Where did I say, "Swansea the size of Toowoomba"? Don't use
quotation marks if you're quoting yourself, twit. I said it would be a more
appropriate comparison. You're still stuck on the comparison bit aren't
you? Swansea City has around 10% of Brisbane's population... what kind of
halfwit would even think of comparing a city of that size with Brisbane?
Like I said, I may as well compare Warwick SHIRE with Swansea County... but
then you'd have an as equally irrelevant comparison as you'd have with
Swansea And Brisbane.

In any case, Swansea is a city and a county, so what's your point? Around
80% of those people live within the city, so comparing the wider county with
Brisbane City is absolutely stupid.

What I did say previously was:

"That's because you lived in a town 1/10th the size of Brisbane. Have you
not been told this enough times yet? Why don't you move to Toowoomba if you
want to compare apples with apples and not apples with oranges? The latter
only makes you seem more sillier than your previous post, as it's obviously
not hitting home each time that you're told." - is a quote.

Who said that? I saw someone say that the only people who call Swansea a
county are people working for the council, but I never saw anyone deny that
was actually a county.

    > ... sad , really sad...

What lengths dimwits will go to, just to escape responding to basic
arguments
