Be honest: is it because you're badly off in Britain?

Are you well off in Britain ( good job/ house etc)but still want to emigrate?
or
are you averagely fixed but could do better over there?
or
are things really difficult financially in Britain so you think they will be better inOz?

Be honest guys..........

Hi there,

We ain't that well off here but don't want to emigrate because we think we'll have a fantastic lifestyle in Oz. We have 2 small kids and want to go out for a number of reasons. In our jobs, as nurses, we are under no illusion that we will be earning anymore than what we earn here. We want to go and try to see if we can have a better quality of life not a completely care free one. Things will be hard, as it is now, but then life is too short for the what if's. We will try our best which in my book will be pretty damn hard.

Regards

Ginny

Honestly?

Well we have two well paid jobs average income £55K
Both have good potential to advance up career ladder.
Nice 3 bed semi - £500 per month mortgage.
No kids - lots of disposable income.

So we're not sure why we want to go other than to live some where else in the world - that we can both work easily (have one job offer $50k plus employee sponsorship)

So we are going to Brisbane.

But a lot of things we have read - will it be too hot , too
many bugs, will we end up just working with less holidays,
will we be okay financially - all this is unsettling?

Will we still go? Probably because the weather will be nicer for longer and we can always come back.

I have a great job, but my husband doesn't really enjoy his.
We are very well off here with a good standard of living and a high joint income. We have a £ 500 k house with a very small mortgage. Going to Oz wil mean we will be able to free all of the money in the house and go as millionaires !!

Even though we have a lot of opportunities we are so held back by the weather, it does not let us do what we want. We are very much outdoor go-getting people and we end up sitting around in London BORED ! nothing here interests us any more and most of our time is spent planning our next holiday. We also spend a fortune on holidays each year just to get some sun.

Going out to Oz will mean that we will have enough capital to open up some sort of business- which is what my hubby has always wanted to do. We will also be able to buy a fab house and have no mortgage, which is very appealing .

I mainly cannot wait to see the sun shining most days, I hate the cold and this time of year makes me feel depresed knowing I have 5 months of rain, wind and cold grey skies.
My children also love the outdoors and sports, it is just not the climate here for it!

We are not 'dreaming' of a better life in Oz, just one equal to what we have here but with sun!!

Best of luck to everyone.

Weather forcast for Brisbane today, (Spring). 35 degrees. I was out walking at 4.45am, daylight already and came back, cursing the heat! Cant wait till Summer, NOT.

I think most of the people I have met who immigrated here, were not wealthy in the UK. They had very basic jobs, but because of the appalling dollar, their assets equated to a very nice house compared to UK.

I will always think it is very Sad to have to say Goodbye to your Family just to get a bigger house tho, just my thoughts, I am sure many would readily say goodbye to their Family.

Good Luck why ever you are coming.

Dotty,

I'm not trying to provoke a negative reaction (I can see that this thread may result in some heated responses), but was just wondering if you've considered moving from Brisbane to Adelaide.

I haven't been to this site for a few months, but still remember the many messages between you and Chris one time. If I remember correctly; you hate Queensland, and want to go back to the UK.

I spent a couple of weeks up in Brisbane one January and I vowed not to return, ever, in the wet season. The weather here is so much better, you get pretty hot days in summer (sometimes as high as 42) but it's usually a dry heat which is so much easier to bear.

You wouldn't have the problem of the exchange rate, in fact your money would go further here, the cost of living is lower, and property prices cheaper.

Well, I don't want to interfere with you life, but just wanted to make a suggestion.

Best wishes, Nara

What you asking is a good question the thing is most will not know how well off they are until they have left UK ,I do think its easy to dream about a better life and not take stock of what you have.Weather seems to be a big thing , from a personal point of view I enjoyed a nice day in UK far more than here , if you get jam every day its not a treat anymore.
If you go to Melbourne the weather about the same as south of England , most states have a wet cold winter.
I am sure the dreamers will be crying on this post soon so better move on.Best Wishes PB

Re: Be honest: is it because you're badly off in Britain?

My situation is somewhat different as I am already an expat (in Europe). Financially - I was reasonably well off in the UK and much better off as an expat. We are moving to NZ and from a purely financial point of view we would be MUCH worse off there than either UK or Europe - the same would be true if we were moving to Aus, though to a lesser extent.

If we had not made some savings over the years, and if we were younger, I think I would have been quite worried about the move and its impact on the family wealth and quality of life as measured by housing and decent living. As it is, we can probably live quite well, ie buy a house (no outgoings for rent) and dig a little into the remaining savings to supplement earnings until my pension comes on stream. The job I will hopefully get in NZ will be there to earn enough to avoid eroding the family capital too much.

But having said that, we look forward to a much higher quality of family life in NZ that does not rely too heavily on a high income. Ie outdoorsy, healthy, family, activity-oriented.

Cheers - Don

Having just spent sometimes in the Obs and Gyne Clinic of a Large Teaching Hospital in a less than Enchanting area of the UK, I can see what we Brits are allowing to breed. Smelly tattooed, drunk and overweight, thats the women! Maybe Oz is no better, but there has to be more room to go and hide!

We are not escaping for a life of big houses and jobs that pay a fortune, we just want a life where the weather is better than a few months of sun (if your lucky) and a more relaxed lifestyle.

We have a nice house hubby has a well paid job and lots of hobbies (that we have not got time to do or the weather is unsuitable for them) We are still quite young and want to enjoy life to the full.

Has said before on this forum it's no fun trying to get your 3 and a half year old inside cus it's started to rain or it's too cold for them to play out any longer.

We live in a nice area which i must admit is very safe and friendly (we know almost all our neighbours!), schools are good round here and i work close to home. My husband is a self emp carpenter and earns a good wage. I would love to go back to Australia as i see it as an adventure which i am eager to take. It is a beautiful and diverse country and offers me and my family a chance of an outdoor life. As a rule, Perth weather offers us the chance to plan our weekends- bbq's with friends, trips to the coast, camping which is impossible in this country- it can be mid July and spend the whole weekend raining! Also with the money we take from the house it should allow me to have another child and actually spend some time not working. I hate the fact that i work full time and never see my boy (and like Juls, we now come home from work and cannot let our 3 and half yr old out unless we want to stand outside for an hour freezing).
Also the foos is great. I love all the salads and fish that are so cheap compared to UK. I intend to live on king prawns for at least the first month!!
There are lots of othet reasons-too many to mention. All i know is that as a child i enjoyed a far superior qulaity of life in Geelong (3 years-expats) to the one that i can offer to my son and subsequent children (?) here.

Good luck everyone!

Like yourself we are well off, in the process of selling our property to builders (large plot, multiple new houses). Children in very good schools, 1 in Grammar, 1 has just completed the 11+, another coming up to it. Last job was very well paid, resigned now. Like the outdoor life and so does the family.

We are going out for a better future for our family, the UK is slowly going to pot as it becomes more multi-cultural, gets closer to Europe, crime, grime, traffic and other problems such as health, pensions, etc can only get worse as the population increases.

Yes, and before the whinging poms on this newgroup start we know that the problems also exist in Australia but there are a lot less people confined to a larger space even in the city suburbs (not talking about central cities), plot size and neighbour separation is an Australian bonus that can only be achieved here by moving to an area with little work such as Devon, Wales, etc. You still have the same commute time in Australia but outside of work there is more ability to do outdoor recreation because of the weather.

Australia also has a better chance of surviving the multi-cultural change that will continue to affect the world in the future, due to it's distance from it's neighbours and it's current attitude of nationhood, something that has disappeared from the UK through political correctness and ethics.

We are not thinking about the next five or even ten years, but the rest of our life and the life and future of our children. My eldest is an A grade student with tremendous ability but spends his time doing up to 3 hours of home work each night at the age of twelve, yes he could slow down and accept a lower grade but he won't. When asked if he wanted to go to Australia he said yes as he would have to do less home work as the pace of schooling is slower and have more time to do Judo, Rubgy and play with friends, yet he will most probally still be able to go to a top university. Our other two children are cut from the same bolt of cloth, capable of high achivement if they should want it, this choice is theirs not ours.

Work wise Australia we intend to start a new business, we could do so here, it would be just as difficult as over there.

But the quality of life would be far higher in the long term.

Well PommieB don't have a drink in an English Pub! If the prices don't get you then the drugs that are put in it by kind dealers will make your head spin. You drink out of bottles here sonny, they can't get the drugs into them as easy. Especially the date rape drugs they use on the girls. You may, of course get accosted by a Gay. Unfortunately, round about closing, there will be a fight from the drunk and drugged men with the bouncers. The streets will have vomit and partly decomposed Donnas all over them; Sunday is a busy morning for the Street Cleansers.

Of course if you are a women you end up being sexually assaulted, a man you get beaten up. Britain is fine! We will welcome you back PommieB, let me know your e-mail address and I shall meet you at the airport and escort you home; you may not have the skills to survive unless you are used to swimming in shark infested waters.

Oh Boy, you are in for a shock. Walk around the shopping centres on DOLE Day. Stinking sweaty huge women with skinny beer bellied husbands, bare footed unshowered, hair you could fry chips in. My husband (Australian) wont go to the shops on Dole day. Reckons he cant stand the smell! Also objects to how many of them he is paying to support.
Believe me the unwashed in 35 degree heat are not a pretty sight!
