Nursing Queensland
We are literally about to apply for our Australian Visa (Family Sponsored). I am a registered nurse, with a degree. Whilst I have searched the internet and gained a lot of information, I am just wondering from any other nurses out in Australia already or those planning to emigrate also, what sort of salary I could expect. By the time we move in Australia all being well, I will have been qualified for 5 -6 years. I will have worked with in Elderly Medicine, Respiratory, Nursing Homes, Care Homes, Drug and Rehab Centres, Cosmetic Surgery Clinics, District Nursing, so have a varied and extensive experience. I will also be a Student Mentor, and will hopefully get some other qualifications in by the time I go.

Re: Nursing Queensland
It means that at least in WA there is an over subscription of nurses at the moment and local nursing graduates finding it hard to gain employment.
On the other hand care homes for the elderly are a better bet, being often short staffed, with I believe quite a turnover. Hence a better bet trying for the latter.

I was pointing to your post and the general discussion to highlight how the nurse job market had tightened over the last ten years, and thus that jobs were liable to be rural ones, and that wages would be constrained.

I believe that employers now due to financial restraints are seeking to employ more experienced Nurse. In that an experienced Nurse can literally ‘get’ on with the job, where as a graduate would need more training, more time away from the clinic area etc, which obviously costs more and impacts the clinic area. I’m
Speaking to our visa agent today / tomorrow so I will seek their advice / opinion.

Unfortunately nursing is no longer a job in high demand in Australia. The universities here churn out thousands of new niurses every year, many of whom cannot find work. One of the reasons I didn't bother to finish my degree. The other was that I make more money as medical admin than I would nursing.

Dorothy - whilst I somewhat get your point. There is an element of truth to what I have said, it happens in every work place, every job. There are jobs for nursing still - and the majority I have seen are requiring a minimum of 5 years post qualification.

Once you have the visa, and before you move everything to the other side of the world, I might well pay a visit (call it a reccy) and see if you can get job bites in your particular specialisms.
The only reason people are telling you this is because nursing is one of those areas where things have definitely changes over the previous decade. Forewarned is forearmed etc.

GarryP - I am already searching for jobs, emailing recruitment agencies etc before I apply for my visa, as I am sure you will agree there isn't much point going if I can't get work.
I am as previously mentioned liaising with our visa agent regards work, so far they have been honest and open about our chances of success in every way emigrating out to Australia.

I do hope your visa agent is also a recruitment agent. Otherwise their job is to get you a visa. As for jobs, that's not their area of expertise.
I'll bow out now. But good luck.

Dorothy - seriously is there any need for your tone of voice. I welcome everyone’s opinion.

whilst I value your opinion, just like here job roles go, yet they still recruit for positions. I can see that Queensland and Western Australia aren’t expecting applications for Nurse, hence the agreement with you in the job situation. But there are still opportunities out there. Having looked at job vacancies in those states that are still wanting nurses - they are plentiful. Like positions here some require more experience others not. The point of this post is not to claim that any of us know better, claim to be an expert - but to communicate and gain advice. Thanks for your assistance in the first instance.

Re: Nursing Queensland
There is certainly a lot of cutting costs in vogue in recent times. I guess only being here on the ground will be the only way to know the worth of migrating. Surely a move for an extended time frame, but allowing options to return, would be the way forward? Surely there must be numerous on line forums with regards to foreign nurses with views from those already here.

Thanks ‘the troubadour’. It’s one of those ... that if we don’t do it we may regret it, we may come and after a time ... want to return, hence not selling our house. I will try and find the forums you’ve mentioned. Thanks so much
