Default Want to move to Melbourne

Hi all, new to this. So just started the process as a nurse to emigrate to Australia. Originally we were thinking of Perth however we have now decided to head towards Melbourne. We have never been to Melbourne but have done our research. We are going to go out there for three weeks next year to get a feel for the place before making our final decision whilst hopefully waiting for our visas. One of our main worries is how an earth we are going to get a rented place without having a job at first? We have looked at rents my god quite a bit more expensive then here haha! But we are aware we need a fair bit of dosh to head out with (already started saving) hopefully we will set up a bank account whilst we are on our holiday (perhaps register to my uncle who live in Perth) so then we can transfer money as have seen can be a delay in getting funds across. Please could someone who has done a similar thing to what we're planning give me some advice on how to get a rented house to then work around getting a job? Thanks

Hi there, when we moved over two years ago we rented out various holiday rentals while I looked for a job. It gave me the flexibility to broaden my search for the right job before laying down roots. In fact we were hoping to move to Newcastle but ended up down here in Melbourne instead. Getting a rental was pretty straightforward, we managed to get the keys within 4 days but we had to put 6 months rent upfront to secure it.

Not sure if you can open an account in person or not seeing as you're not resident, I may be wrong. We opened an account with ANZ in the UK before we arrived. Transfers only take a day or two.

Getting a visa is your priority before any of this though. Good luck!

Thanks. With regards to holiday rentals, how much did you pay? And where did you find it? Also, how much was the rental price for 6 months upfront?

For holiday rentals we had 4 altogether, we moved around a lot, we paid minimum $700 for a week and $1100 max. We needed at least 3 bedrooms for a family of five. Price is dictated by location and time of year, we were August which is low season out with the school holidays. Depends what you want to pay I suppose. We tried to keep the cost down as much as we could without renting a complete hovel. We used a combination of HomeAway rentals, Stayz and Airbnb.

For the 6 months rent I was referring to the house we rented once we settled and not for any of the holiday rentals. I apologise for not making that quite clear ☺

We are in WA, but we did an airbnb our first month which was far more cost-effective than a holiday rental. Don't know how viable that will be in Melbourne but worth checking.
